Michael Carrick has issued a direct challenge to Manchester United's underperforming squad after being confirmed as the club's interim head coach until the end of the season. The 44-year-old steps into the role following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, tasked with stabilising the team and reigniting their push for European qualification.
Carrick's Coaching Team and Immediate Challenge
Carrick's backroom staff will be a blend of experience and familiar faces. He will be assisted by former England assistant manager Steve Holland and his ex-Middlesbrough colleague Jonathan Woodgate. Under-21s coach Travis Binnion and former defender Jonny Evans, who joined the setup last week, will continue in their roles, while Darren Fletcher returns to his position with the Under-18s.
The new boss inherits a team languishing in seventh place in the Premier League and out of both domestic cups. His first assignment could hardly be tougher: a Manchester derby against rivals City at Old Trafford this Saturday, followed by a trip to league leaders Arsenal.

Speaking for the first time since his appointment on United's Inside Carrington podcast, Carrick expressed his exhilaration at returning to the club where he spent 12 years as a player and had a brief stint as caretaker manager in 2021. "It's an unbelievable feeling to come back through the doors," he said. "Coming to work was giving me butterflies in a really good way."
Carrick, a self-professed fan, emphasised the weight of responsibility and outlined his footballing philosophy. "Hopefully we can play a really exciting type of football," he stated. "I want to be off my seat and enjoying watching the boys play. I'm buzzing to get started and see what we can do."
