Lionel Messi, widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time, has offered fans a rare glimpse into his private world during a candid interview. The 38-year-old Argentine maestro, enjoying a well-earned winter break, discussed everything from his peculiar drink of choice to the challenges of balancing fame with family life.
Messi's Unusual Recipe for Relaxation
Fresh from leading Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup victory, Messi revealed his preferred method of unwinding involves a rather unique beverage. In an interview with Luzu TV, the superstar confessed: "I like wine, but if not, I have the usual: wine with Sprite. That way it hits fast, haha."
He explained that the mix is ideal for him, especially under the scorching Miami sun, as it helps him relax. This revelation came after a triumphant end to the season where his two assists were instrumental in securing a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS Cup final, a moment he described as "beautiful and emotional."
The Structured Life of a Superstar
Away from the pitch, Messi emphasised the importance of solitude in his daily routine. Joking that he is "very weird," he said: "I really like being alone. The mess at home with the three kids running around everywhere ends up overwhelming me and I like to have a moment of solitude."
He lives in Miami with his wife, 37-year-old Antonella, and their three sons: Thiago (13), Mateo (10), and Ciro (8). Messi describes himself as highly structured, noting that if his planned day is disrupted, "it changes everything for me." He credits Antonella with handling much more than he does, admitting his mood can affect small, trivial matters.
Preparing for a Record Sixth World Cup
Messi is now preparing for what will almost certainly be his sixth and final World Cup this summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament will see him break the record for the most World Cup appearances by a player.
Argentina arrives as defending champions, having lifted the trophy in Qatar four years ago after a final where Messi scored twice. Despite his legendary status, he remained humble about his selection for the upcoming tournament, stating last month: "I hope I can be there. I've said before that I would love to be there. At worst, I'll be there watching it live, but it will be special."
He praised the current Argentine squad under coach Lionel Scaloni, highlighting their winning mentality. "It's a squad full of winners, with a strong mentality, who want to win more, and that is contagious," Messi said. "You see it in training, in matches. You see them train and they give everything."
Argentina's first match in the tournament is scheduled for 17 June. They have been drawn in a group where they will face Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
