Michael Carrick Agrees Interim Man Utd Deal After Amorim Sacking
Carrick agrees deal to become Man Utd interim head coach

Manchester United have moved swiftly to stabilise the club, agreeing a deal in principle for former midfielder Michael Carrick to become their interim head coach.

Carrick Steps Into The Breach

The 44-year-old is set to take charge until the conclusion of the current campaign. This follows the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on January 5, which brought his 14-month tenure to an abrupt end. Carrick emerged as the frontrunner after talks with both him and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Monday, with the club focusing their efforts on the ex-England international.

An official announcement confirming his appointment is anticipated later on Tuesday. Carrick is no stranger to the hot seat at Old Trafford, having previously overseen three matches as caretaker in late 2021 following Solskjaer's sacking. During that brief spell, he remained unbeaten, securing two wins and a draw before Ralf Rangnick's arrival.

Rooney Backs Former Teammate

The news has been welcomed by former United captain Wayne Rooney, who played alongside Carrick for many years. Speaking on his BBC Sport show, Rooney endorsed the move, stating Carrick is "a very clever person and he'll command respect from the dressing room."

Rooney also suggested he would be open to joining Carrick's backroom staff if asked, emphasising the need for figures who understand the club's culture. "I think it's a great opportunity to bring the spirit of Manchester United back into the club," Rooney said, highlighting a perceived loss of identity this season.

A Club In Transition

Carrick's return comes during a turbulent period for the Red Devils. After Amorim's exit, technical director Darren Fletcher took temporary control, presiding over a 2-2 draw at Burnley and a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton. The team currently languishes in 15th place in the Premier League.

The new interim boss, who won five league titles and the Champions League during his 464-game playing career at United, faces an immediate challenge. His first match in charge will be the crucial Manchester derby at home to rivals Manchester City on Saturday. Players are due to report back to Carrington on Wednesday after two pre-planned days off.

Carrick's most recent managerial role was at Middlesbrough, where he reached the Championship play-offs in 2023 before being dismissed last summer. His task now is to steer United through the remainder of a difficult season and begin restoring the club's fortunes.
