Guglielmo Vicario has faced renewed criticism from Jamie Carragher after his failure to stop Dominik Szoboszlai's free-kick during Tottenham Hotspur's visit to Liverpool at Anfield. The incident occurred in the first half of the match, adding to the scrutiny on Tottenham's goalkeeping situation.
Szoboszlai's Strike Puts Liverpool Ahead
Dominik Szoboszlai fired Liverpool into the lead on the 18th minute with a right-footed curling effort executed in front of The Kop. The goal gave the home side an early advantage in a highly anticipated Premier League fixture.
Carragher's Scathing Assessment
Replays of the goal revealed that Vicario managed to get a good hand to the ball but was ultimately unable to prevent it from finding the back of the net. This detail did little to appease Jamie Carragher, who expressed his disbelief during his co-commentary on Sky Sports on Sunday.
'He [Szoboszlai] is a free-kick specialist, but I tell you what Tottenham don't have a goalkeeping specialist,' Carragher stated emphatically. He further elaborated, 'It's not far off the middle of the goal you have got to save that - wow. That's awful, absolutely shocking from the goalkeeper.'
Carragher did not hold back in his analysis, linking Vicario's performance to broader issues within the Tottenham squad. 'The reason why the other fella [Antonín Kinsky] played in midweek is because he's not good enough, that's what it was,' he asserted, referencing Tottenham's recent lineup decisions. 'He then ends up coming on in the game which has been well-documented, but Tottenham have got huge problems in goal.'
This criticism underscores ongoing concerns about Tottenham's defensive reliability, with Vicario's form becoming a focal point for pundits and fans alike. The match at Anfield highlighted not just a single error but a perceived systemic weakness in the goalkeeping department, raising questions about the team's prospects for the season.
