Nicky Butt Urges Man Utd to Give Bruno Fernandes 'Anything He Wants' to Stay
Butt: Man Utd Must Give Fernandes 'Anything He Wants' to Stay

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has issued a passionate plea to the Red Devils hierarchy, urging them to give captain Bruno Fernandes "anything he wants" to ensure he remains at Old Trafford. This comes amid persistent transfer speculation linking the Portuguese playmaker with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

Fernandes' Pivotal Role Highlighted

Butt's comments follow another standout performance from Fernandes, who provided two assists in Manchester United's crucial 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at the weekend. This result significantly strengthened the club's grip on Champions League qualification under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Throughout this turbulent season, Fernandes has been an ever-present figure under both Ruben Amorim and Carrick, often serving as a beacon of hope during difficult periods. Widely regarded as United's best player, his future continues to be subject to intense speculation.

December Revelation About United's Stance

In a bombshell interview last December, Fernandes revealed that Manchester United had wanted him to leave during the previous summer transfer window. "Manchester United wanted me to leave, I have that in my head," Fernandes disclosed. "I think they didn't have the courage because Ruben Amorim wanted me here, but from the club's side I felt that if I left, it wouldn't be so bad."

The midfielder also confirmed he had consulted with former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo about a potential switch to Saudi Arabia, where several clubs had expressed interest. "Cristiano advised me, but the final decision always rested with me," Fernandes explained. "I decided to stay because I genuinely love the club, but loyalty isn't as well regarded as it once was."

Butt's Strong Warning to United

As the season approaches its conclusion and another summer transfer window looms, Butt delivered a stark warning on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast. "Man United cannot let him go, no matter what it costs them," Butt declared emphatically. "They cannot let Bruno Fernandes go. They'll have to give him anything he wants to keep him because if they let him go the fans will go absolutely nuts."

Butt, who played alongside some of United's greatest midfielders, praised Fernandes' recent performances, particularly noting his creative contribution. "It's no coincidence that he's now playing where he should have been playing for the last two years and he's playing unbelievably well and creating chances," Butt observed. "His pass for the second goal (versus Villa) is an unbelievable pass."

Addressing Past Criticism

The former midfielder acknowledged he had previously been critical of Fernandes' leadership qualities, comparing him unfavorably to legendary United captains like Tony Adams, Bryan Robson, and Roy Keane. However, Butt was quick to emphasize Fernandes' undeniable contribution to the team.

"What he's always done is created and scored goals and he's carried that football team pretty much on his own for I'd say a good two years, two seasons," Butt conceded, highlighting how Fernandes had maintained exceptional individual performances even when the team struggled collectively.

All-Time United XI Consideration

When asked whether Fernandes deserved a place in an all-time Manchester United XI, Butt offered a nuanced perspective. "I can see why they're saying that talent-wise, but the problem I've got with that is who do you leave out and where'd you put him?" he questioned. "Are you going to play him before (Eric) Cantona, (Paul) Scholes, (Bryan) Robson, (Roy) Keane?"

Butt clarified that this wasn't a reflection on Fernandes' ability, stating: "It's a no in my eyes but that's not taking anything away from his talent - he is an unbelievable footballer and they did talk about him being player of the year this year and I can see why."

Team Improvement Under Carrick

The former United star noted how Fernandes' performances have been enhanced by the team's overall improvement under Michael Carrick's management. "Up until when Michael took over, he was playing in a team that were really poor and not performing but he was the only one performing," Butt explained. "Now the team have got better under Michael and are getting results he just looks like an unbelievable player."

Casemiro's Impressive Resurgence

While Fernandes' future remains uncertain, one midfielder who will almost certainly depart Old Trafford this summer is Casemiro. The Brazilian's contract expires at season's end and will not be renewed, despite his impressive resurgence this campaign.

Butt, who had previously expressed doubts about Casemiro's longevity, praised the midfielder's remarkable turnaround. "I tell you what as well, and I probably talked him down a little bit over the last season or two because I did think his legs had gone, but Casemiro has just got a second lease of life," Butt admitted. "It's unbelievable."

Highlighting Casemiro's seven goals this season, Butt noted how the Brazilian's understanding with Fernandes had benefited both players. "So you put Bruno away from him, a bit more advanced or to the side of him, he just passes the ball to Bruno all the time and he puts the finishing pass through," Butt described. "But he has been brilliant in the last 10 games."

With Fernandes contracted until the end of next season, Manchester United face a critical decision about their captain's future as they seek to build on their recent improvement under Carrick's guidance.
