Wayne Bridge has voiced strong support for Cesc Fabregas to become Chelsea's next head coach, following a conversation with the former midfielder last year. Fabregas, 39, is currently impressing as manager of Como in Serie A and has been frequently linked with the Stamford Bridge vacancy.
Bridge's Endorsement
Speaking to the Mirror, Bridge explained: "I've talked about this a lot with Joe Cole. It's hard to know who they can get. The one who stands out for me is Cesc Fabregas. He is such an intelligent player. I know people who have been to Como to see him and they speak very highly of him."
Bridge drew comparisons to Michael Carrick at Manchester United, noting: "Carrick was so intelligent, and I can imagine Cesc being able to do what Carrick has done—coming in and getting the team playing well."
He added: "From what I hear, he has got great ideas. I like the sound of Cesc. I met him either last year or the year before. He literally lives and breathes football, so I think he would do really well."
Chelsea's Managerial Search
Liam Rosenior was dismissed just four months into his tenure, leaving BlueCo searching for a fifth permanent manager since their takeover in May 2022. Xabi Alonso, Andoni Iraola, and Xavi have also been mentioned as candidates, but Fabregas appears to be Bridge's preferred choice.
Transfer Priorities
Bridge also shared his thoughts on Chelsea's transfer needs, stressing the importance of defensive reinforcements. "It has to start from the back. They definitely need experience at centre-half," he said, citing Thiago Silva's impact and suggesting Marquinhos of PSG as a potential target.
Regarding the goalkeeper position, Bridge noted Robert Sanchez's shot-stopping ability but added he "could be better with his feet." He also identified a need for backup for striker Joao Pedro.
Current Season Outlook
Chelsea have endured a difficult campaign, with six consecutive Premier League defeats following Monday's loss to Nottingham Forest. However, their FA Cup run has provided some solace, with a semi-final victory over Leeds United setting up a final against Manchester City.
With four league matches remaining, Chelsea's European qualification remains uncertain. Champions League football seems unlikely, but a Conference League or Europa League spot is possible. Winning the FA Cup would guarantee entry into the Europa League.
