A £1 coin currently in circulation could be worth a staggering sixty times its face value, according to a recent expert revelation. Britons are being urged to scrutinise their pocket change for a specific 2016 coin bearing a minuscule but highly valuable marking.
Expert Identifies Valuable Coin on Social Media
In a video shared on the popular social media platform TikTok, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard detailed the characteristics of this rare find. He explained that this particular coin, minted in 2016, might be hiding in everyday currency, potentially turning a simple pound into a significant windfall.
Addressing his audience, the expert emphasised: "Here is a £1 coin you must keep searching for, worth £60." This coin is among the earliest of the new 12-sided £1 coins, which were officially introduced into circulation in 2017, making it a piece of numismatic history.
Spotting the Elusive Privy Mark
The key to identifying this valuable coin lies in a tiny crosslet cross privy mark located on the reverse side. This marking is positioned in the lower left-hand area, specifically beneath the crown design but above the word "one". Due to its small size and placement near the coin's rim, it can be easily overlooked by the untrained eye.
The expert elaborated on its rarity: "Most 2016 £1 coins appear identical to later versions, but a select few feature this tiny crosslet cross privy mark near the bottom left. This mark was exclusively added for special commemorative sets, meaning only a limited number of coins possess it."
Substantial Value for Collectors
This scarcity has driven considerable interest among numismatists, with collectors willing to pay premium prices. While a standard 2016 £1 coin retains its face value of £1, those with the special privy mark can command prices around £60, and in some cases, even higher.
The expert highlighted the potential payoff: "It's easy to miss, but collectors are willing to pay big money for it. So, go pour out your £1 coins and search for this one." At the time of reporting, an example of this rare coin was listed on eBay for £94.29, underscoring the robust market demand.
This discovery serves as a reminder that everyday items can hold unexpected value, encouraging people to examine their coins more closely. Whether you're a seasoned collector or simply curious, checking your change could lead to a lucrative find, blending history with potential profit in the palm of your hand.
