Scottish Labour Leader Calls for MP's Resignation Amid Security Investigations
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has declared that MP Joani Reid should step down from Parliament if there is "any hint of any wrongdoing at all", as multiple investigations unfold into security and conduct allegations linked to her and her husband.
The East Kilbride and Strathaven MP resigned from the Labour Party last month following the arrest of her husband, David Taylor, on suspicion of espionage for China. This development has sparked heightened scrutiny over national security implications.
Allegations of Inappropriate Behaviour Surface
This week, further reports emerged alleging that Ms Reid was involved in inappropriate behaviour with two senior naval officers. One of these officers commanded a nuclear-armed submarine at Faslane on the Clyde, a critical defence installation.
It is understood that the officer was investigated over these claims but was not found to have breached any rules. He is no longer in charge of the submarine, though this change is reportedly due to unrelated reasons, and he remains in the Royal Navy.
The Ministry of Defence has indicated through the Press Association that it has no security concerns regarding the alleged incidents, but the situation continues to raise questions about propriety and security protocols.
Sarwar's Firm Stance on the Matter
Speaking to reporters in Edinburgh, Anas Sarwar emphasised the seriousness of the situation, particularly given its national security dimensions. He stated, "The situation in itself, when it relates to national security, is of course serious enough."
He highlighted that Ms Reid is currently subject to an independent investigation by the Government's legal unit, while her husband is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police for allegedly assisting a foreign intelligence service. Sarwar noted that Ms Reid has been suspended from Scottish Labour and is not a party MP during these probes.
Sarwar urged caution against prejudging the investigations but reiterated his demand for resignation if wrongdoing is found. He said, "If there is any hint of any wrongdoing at all, of them, then this person should not be a Scottish Labour MP and they shouldn't be an MP, but I am not going to prejudge that investigation."
He expressed deep concern over the reports, justifying the swift suspension of Ms Reid from the party. "Am I deeply concerned by some of the reports? Of course, I am. That's why we took swift action," he added.
Current Status of Investigations
While Ms Reid faces an internal party investigation, she is not under police investigation herself. Her husband, David Taylor, is one of three men arrested and is being probed by the Met for potential espionage activities.
Ms Reid has previously denied any wrongdoing, stating, "I have done nothing wrong," and clarifying that she faces no accusations related to her husband's case. She has been approached for further comment on the latest allegations but has not yet responded.
A Royal Navy spokesperson commented on the broader security context, saying, "The security of the nuclear deterrent is our highest priority, and we have robust processes in place to protect the security of our people and capabilities." They declined to comment on individual cases.
The ongoing investigations by the Metropolitan Police and the Government's legal unit are expected to conclude in the coming weeks, potentially determining Ms Reid's political future and addressing the national security concerns raised by these events.
