Manchester United are planning to make two midfield signings in the summer transfer window, with a focus on players who can complement Kobbie Mainoo, according to reports. The 19-year-old academy graduate is set to sign a lucrative new contract, cementing his place at the heart of the club's long-term plans.
Mainoo's Rise Under Carrick
Last year, Mainoo's future was uncertain under former manager Ruben Amorim, who believed the teenager could not play alongside Bruno Fernandes. Mainoo requested a loan move, which was rejected, and Chelsea were linked with his services. However, Amorim's dismissal transformed Mainoo's fortunes. Under interim boss Michael Carrick, Mainoo has become a first-team regular and is now poised to sign a deal worth around £120,000 per week, a fourfold increase on his previous wages, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2031.
Transfer Targets
United are seeking two midfielders whose attributes complement each other and blend with Mainoo's strengths. Potential targets include Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Newcastle's Elliot Anderson, though both would command substantial fees. Newcastle duo Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have also been linked, while Brighton's Carlos Baleba remains on the radar. The club is likely to target a player in the mould of Casemiro, who is leaving at the end of the season.
Carrick praised Mainoo after United's 1-0 win at Chelsea, saying: "I thought that was the best Kobbie has played, certainly since I've been back here. He showed so much quality and composure in a tough environment."
