Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has travelled to Perth to attend the funeral of prominent Labor strategist Tim Picton, who tragically died following an alleged one-punch assault. During the emotional service, the Prime Minister revealed he had written a personal letter for Mr Picton's four-year-old daughter Charlotte, to be given to her mother Priya for safekeeping until she grows older.
A Tragic Loss for the Labor Family
The 36-year-old father-of-one passed away early on Monday morning, surrounded by loved ones after spending three weeks in a coma. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 27th in Northbridge, when Western Australian Police responded to reports of a disturbance outside licensed premises.
Mr Picton was found unconscious at the scene, having allegedly fallen and struck his head on the pavement after being assaulted. Several bystanders reportedly rushed to provide assistance before emergency services arrived.
Personal Reflections from the Prime Minister
Speaking to the ABC, Prime Minister Albanese explained his thoughtful gesture toward the young girl who has lost her father. "I have a letter today that I'll give to Priya, Tim's wife, for Charlotte so that when she grows up she has what are some of my personal reflections on her dad," the Prime Minister stated emotionally.
"For Tim, Charlotte was the apple of his eye," Albanese continued. "And to think of Tim's passing… allegedly after a one-punch attack in Northbridge, just so senseless, the circumstances are just horrible. It's just so senseless. Senseless violence is just beyond comprehension."
A Distinguished Political Career
Tim Picton enjoyed a remarkable career as a political strategist, playing an instrumental role in guiding Western Australian Labor to their landslide 2021 election victory. That historic win left the opposition with just two seats in the state parliament, demonstrating his exceptional campaign skills.
Beyond his Western Australian achievements, Mr Picton previously worked with former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews and served alongside Trade Minister Don Farrell during the federal Gillard government. His most recent position was as strategy director for mining company Mineral Resources, showcasing his versatility across political and corporate spheres.
Family Tributes and Heartfelt Memories
Mr Picton was the brother of South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton, who shared a heartbreaking tribute following the tragedy. "Whether it was running an election campaign, securing a mining deal, travelling the world, building magnetic tile castles or breeding fish, Tim never did things by halves - he always gave 200 per cent," the Health Minister wrote.
He praised his brother's "razor-sharp strategic mind and natural charisma" that meant he was "always two steps ahead of everyone else." However, Chris Picton emphasised that above all professional accomplishments, "the most important thing to Tim was being a dad."
"The happiest I ever saw him was when he was with Charlotte," he continued. "Joy overflowed from them both. From fairy dancing to swimming lessons to story time, they shared a magical bond."
The Health Minister concluded with a promise to the young girl: "In the years ahead we will make sure Charlotte knows just how much Tim adored her, and share with her all the precious memories we have of them together."
Legal Proceedings Underway
Following the alleged incident, 20-year-old Brodie Jake Dewar has been charged with grievous bodily harm. He is scheduled to appear in court in February as legal proceedings continue regarding the events that led to Mr Picton's tragic death.
Mourners gathered at Perth's Optus Stadium on Friday to remember the influential campaigner whose strategic mind helped shape political outcomes at both state and federal levels. The funeral brought together political colleagues, friends, and family members united in grief over the sudden loss of a man described as both a brilliant strategist and devoted father.
