President Donald Trump has condemned the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a "political scam" and a "Democratic hoax" following the Department of Justice (DOJ) filing an 11-count indictment against the civil rights organization. The charges allege that the SPLC concealed payments of at least $3 million to informants who infiltrated right-wing hate groups.
DOJ Allegations and SPLC Response
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel accused the SPLC of deceiving donors and regulators by using "sham" accounts and "fictitious companies" to hide the payments. In a press conference, Blanche stated that the organization misled the public and violated federal laws. SPLC CEO Bryan Fair vehemently denied the allegations, calling them "false" and asserting that the group would vigorously defend itself. Fair emphasized that the informants' work had saved lives and that the charges were politically motivated.
Trump's Reaction and Election Claims
President Trump seized on the indictment to bolster his long-standing claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election. He suggested that if the allegations against the SPLC are true, the election results should be invalidated. "This is one of the greatest political scams in American history," Trump declared, linking the case to what he calls a "Democratic hoax." The President's remarks have intensified political tensions, with critics accusing him of using the DOJ to target his adversaries.
The SPLC, founded in 1971, has a history of monitoring hate groups and filing civil rights lawsuits. The indictment marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration's scrutiny of the organization, which has long been a target of conservative criticism.
