Prince Harry Issues Defiant Statement Against Sentebale Charity Lawsuit
The Duke of Sussex has launched a scathing response to a lawsuit filed by Sentebale, the charitable organisation he helped establish nearly two decades ago. In a strongly worded statement released on Friday night, Prince Harry labelled the legal action as "offensive and damaging", vehemently rejecting the claims brought against him.
Charity Co-Founder Faces Legal Action Over Alleged Media Campaign
Sentebale, which Prince Harry co-founded in 2006 in honour of his late mother Princess Diana, provides crucial support for young people living with HIV and AIDS in Botswana and Lesotho. The charity is now pursuing legal action against both Prince Harry and former trustee Mark Dyer, alleging they conducted what representatives have termed an "adverse media campaign" that caused significant disruption and reputational harm to the organisation.
A spokesperson for Prince Harry and Mr Dyer stated unequivocally that they "categorically reject" all allegations made by Sentebale. The statement questioned the charity's decision to pursue legal action against its own founders, expressing particular concern about the use of resources that could otherwise benefit vulnerable communities.
Charity Defends Legal Action as Necessary Protection
In response to the criticism, Sentebale's trustees and executive director have defended their decision to pursue legal action, describing it as necessary for "intervention, protection, and restitution". The charity has emphasised that no charitable funds are being used to finance the lawsuit, with all legal costs covered entirely by external funding sources.
The trustees maintain that this approach ensures the charity's resources continue to be directed toward their primary mission of supporting young people affected by HIV and AIDS in southern Africa, while still addressing what they perceive as serious threats to the organisation's stability and reputation.
Founding Members Question Charity's Priorities
Prince Harry's spokesperson expressed profound disappointment that charitable efforts have seemingly shifted focus from community support to legal confrontation. "It is extraordinary that charitable funds are now being used to pursue legal action against the very people who built and supported the organisation for nearly two decades," the statement declared, highlighting what they see as a misalignment of priorities within the charity's current leadership.
The spokesperson further emphasised that resources should be "directed to the communities the charity was created to serve" rather than being allocated toward litigation against those who originally established and championed the organisation's mission.
Legal Battle Emerges After Nearly Two Decades of Collaboration
This legal dispute marks a significant deterioration in the relationship between Prince Harry and the charity he helped create as a tribute to Princess Diana's humanitarian legacy. For nearly twenty years, the Duke of Sussex has been closely associated with Sentebale's work, frequently participating in fundraising events and public awareness campaigns to support their mission.
The current conflict raises important questions about governance, resource allocation, and the appropriate use of legal mechanisms within charitable organisations, particularly when disputes arise between founding members and current leadership structures.
