A man has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where President Donald Trump was targeted. Trump called for national unity following the attack.
Chaos at the Washington Hilton
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening during the annual fundraiser and awards ceremony for journalists covering the White House. Trump, who had previously boycotted the event, was present this year. At around 8:35pm local time, as appetisers were being served, multiple gunshots rang out. Guests, including reporters from The Independent, took cover under tables as Secret Service agents swarmed the ballroom, drawing their firearms and shouting for people to duck.
Trump and Vance Escorted Out
Video footage shows Secret Service personnel, including tactical teams, rushing Vice President JD Vance, President Trump, and First Lady Melania Trump off the stage. One woman at a table with reporters was heard crying, describing the event as the scariest moment of her life.
Suspect Apprehended and Identified
At 9:17pm, Trump posted on Truth Social that the alleged gunman, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, had been apprehended. He praised law enforcement for their swift action. Allen is accused of shooting a Secret Service officer, who was saved by a bulletproof vest, before being detained. He faces charges including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on federal officers. The suspect is expected to be formally charged on Monday.
Trump’s Press Conference
Shortly after 10:30pm, Trump held a press conference from the White House, still wearing his tuxedo. He described the suspect as a “lone wolf” and initially mistook the gunshots for a falling tray. He praised the Secret Service and FBI, noting the dangers of his profession. Melania Trump reportedly recognised the sound immediately, saying, “That’s a bad noise.”
Investigation and Property Search
Police searched a property in Torrance, California, believed to be Allen’s residence. He is currently undergoing a medical evaluation at a hospital. The FBI and acting US attorney general are leading the investigation.
