Tragedy Strikes as Divers Recover Teenage Girl's Body from River Nene
In a devastating turn of events, dive teams searching for two missing teenagers after a car plunged into the River Nene have recovered the body of a teenage girl. Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the grim discovery on Wednesday, as the search intensifies for a male teenager who remains unaccounted for following the Tuesday evening crash near Wisbech.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The tragic accident occurred at approximately 8:20 PM on Tuesday when a vehicle carrying five occupants, all aged between 16 and 18, left the road and entered the River Nene. Police reports indicate the car was travelling southbound on North Brink in Wisbech St Mary's before it veered off the roadway. The vehicle contained two males and three females, with three individuals—two females and one male—managing to escape and being transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn with non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services have been working tirelessly since the incident, with at least a dozen personnel visible on the riverbank throughout Wednesday. A diver was observed conducting searches in the water, while a white forensic tent stood on the bank and emergency vehicles lined the nearby road. The road is expected to remain closed for the remainder of Wednesday as investigations continue.
Ongoing Search and Police Appeal
Despite recovering the girl's body, police efforts are focused on locating the missing male teenager. Cambridgeshire Police have issued a public appeal for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward, referencing incident 515 of March 17. The force described the recovery as "sadly" confirming the girl's death, highlighting the emotional toll on the community and emergency responders.
This incident underscores the dangers faced by young drivers and passengers, particularly in areas near waterways. The River Nene, a significant waterway in Cambridgeshire, has become the site of a tragic loss that has left the Wisbech community in mourning. As the search continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to assist in bringing closure to the families affected by this heartbreaking event.
