Gunmen Kill 11 at Football Match in Mexico

Gunmen opened fire at a football match in Salamanca, Guanajuato state, on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and wounding 12, according to local authorities. The attack occurred at the end of a match, with ten victims dying at the scene and one later in hospital.

Mayor César Prieto described the incident as a 'regrettable and cowardly' attack, noting that a woman and a child were among the injured. He said the attack was part of a 'wave of violence' in the city and appealed to President Claudia Sheinbaum for federal assistance to control the violence.

The state prosecutor's office confirmed it is investigating and coordinating with federal authorities to reinforce security. Guanajuato has long been one of Mexico's most violent regions due to cartel turf wars. On Saturday, five people were killed in two separate attacks near Salamanca, Prieto said.

Salamanca houses one of seven Pemex refineries, and fuel theft drives a significant criminal economy. Prieto vowed that those responsible would be found, stating criminal groups would not subjugate authorities. Governor Libia Dennise called the attack 'unacceptable' and said security had been reinforced.
