Texas Democratic Senate Primary Shock Poll: Talarico Leads Crockett on Eve of Vote

A stunning final poll from Texas reveals state Representative James Talarico has surged ahead of Representative Jasmine Crockett just one day before the Democratic Senate primary election. The Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey, released on the eve of the vote, shows Talarico commanding the support of 52 percent of likely Democratic primary voters, while Crockett trails with 47 percent.

This five-point advantage places Talarico's lead outside the survey's plus-or-minus 3.3 percent margin of error, potentially allowing him to secure the nomination outright and avoid a gruelling runoff campaign. Tuesday marks primary election day across Texas, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to this heated contest.

National Profiles and Polling Dynamics

Despite Crockett's far greater national recognition, largely stemming from her viral confrontation with then-Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene where she famously insulted the Georgia Republican's appearance during a Congressional hearing, she has lost ground in recent weeks. Early February surveys showed Crockett leading, but Talarico has now overtaken her in the Real Clear Politics polling average.

Polling in Senate races is typically conducted less frequently than in presidential contests, adding significance to this late-breaking data. Talarico entered the national spotlight in mid-February when CBS cancelled a scheduled interview with him on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, prompting host Stephen Colbert to publicly accuse the network of yielding to pressure from the Trump administration.

Demographic Breakdown Reveals Key Voting Blocs

The Emerson survey provides a detailed demographic analysis of voter preferences. Talarico, a white male, dominates among white voters, securing 71 percent support compared to Crockett's 29 percent. He also wins a majority of Hispanic voters, with 60 percent backing him versus 39 percent for Crockett.

In contrast, Black voters overwhelmingly support Crockett, who is Black, by a margin of 80 percent to Talarico's 18 percent. Gender splits show Talarico holds a 17 percent advantage among men (58 percent to 41 percent), while women are nearly evenly divided, with 51 percent preferring Crockett and 48 percent selecting Talarico.

Age demographics further illustrate Talarico's appeal. Likely voters under 40 favour him 54 percent to 44 percent, voters aged 40 to 60 are essentially tied (50 percent Talarico, 49 percent Crockett), and those over 70 also lean toward Talarico (55 percent to 42 percent).

General Election Implications and Republican Concerns

Polling obtained by the Daily Mail from the National Republican Senatorial Committee indicates Talarico performs better than Crockett in hypothetical general election matchups against Republican candidates, including incumbent Senator John Cornyn and primary rival Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. This has sparked alarm among GOP insiders in Texas, with Axios reporting fears that a Talarico victory could enable Democrats to flip a Senate seat held by Republicans since 1993.

On the Republican side, Representative Wesley Hunt is also running, but polling suggests Cornyn and Paxton are likely headed for a runoff after Tuesday's primary. Former President Donald Trump has refrained from endorsing either, praising both Cornyn and the more MAGA-aligned Paxton.

Early Voting Trends and Celebrity Endorsements

Emerson's polling also highlights divergent voting patterns. Talarico holds a substantial 58 percent to 41 percent lead among early voters, while Crockett leads 50 percent to 39 percent among those planning to vote on Election Day. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, noted in a statement that the outcome will hinge on which group turns out in larger numbers by Tuesday's close.

Crockett recently received a boost from rapper Cardi B, who endorsed her in an Instagram video, characterising the congresswoman as a fighter for voters' rights. However, this celebrity support appears insufficient to counteract Talarico's late surge in polling momentum.
