Prince William Declares He's Not in 'Calm State' to Watch Hamnet at Bafta Ceremony
The Prince and Princess of Wales made a striking appearance on the red carpet at the prestigious Bafta awards on Sunday evening. This marked William's first public engagement since the recent arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, creating a notable backdrop to the glamorous event held at London's Royal Festival Hall along the South Bank.
Royal Couple's Candid Conversations About Film
During conversations with Bafta representatives and Southbank Centre executives, Prince William revealed he has yet to watch the highly acclaimed film adaptation Hamnet, based on Maggie O'Farrell's award-winning novel about William Shakespeare's family life and the tragic death of his young son.
"I need to be in quite a calm state and I'm not at the moment," William confessed to Elaine Bedell, chief executive of the Southbank Centre, and Allison Kirkby, chief executive of BT Group. "I will save it."
In contrast, Princess Kate shared that she had viewed the emotionally powerful film just the day before. Speaking with Emily Stillman, chairwoman of Bafta's film committee, and Emma Baehr, executive director of the charity's awards and content, Kate admitted: "Yes, I think it was a very bad idea actually... ended up with very puffy eyes."
Kate's Emotional Response to Hamnet
The Princess of Wales described the film as "really very very powerful" and praised its "fantastic" and "raw" musical score. She particularly noted its poignant portrayal of "intergenerational grief," highlighting the emotional depth that moved her to tears.
Kate also revealed how cinema has become an important tool for family conversations, telling Ms. Bedell and Ms. Kirkby that "the children are getting into film a bit more" and that "it's a really great way to have some of the hard conversations with them." She added that the royal family still has "a long list of films we haven't seen" and hopes their Bafta experience will help address this.
Nostalgic Memories and Family Connections
The evening included nostalgic moments as Emily Stillman reminded Kate that their last meeting occurred in 2013 when the princess was pregnant with Prince George. Stillman recalled Kate performing Harry Potter spells during that previous encounter.
"I do remember that," Kate responded with apparent fondness. She noted that her children "love the idea of being behind the scenes and finding out how it all happens" in the film industry, suggesting a growing family interest in cinematic arts.
Fashion and Formal Acknowledgments
The royal couple coordinated their attire for the event, with Kate wearing an elegant pink and white gown featuring a burgundy velvet belt that perfectly complemented William's matching suit jacket. As the awards ceremony commenced, Bafta chairwoman Sara Putt formally thanked Prince William for his "year-round support" of the arts charity, which he serves as president.
Context of Recent Royal Events
This appearance followed significant developments within the royal family. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested just days earlier on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, spending eleven hours in custody on his sixty-sixth birthday. The allegations concern sharing sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein during Andrew's tenure as the UK's trade envoy.
Princess Kate had made her first public appearance since the arrest on Saturday, wearing an England rugby scarf to watch the national team lose to Ireland 42-21 in the Six Nations tournament at Twickenham. The Bafta ceremony therefore represented the couple's second consecutive day of public engagements amid ongoing family developments.
