US-Iran Nuclear Talks Conclude Without Agreement Amid Escalating Tensions
High-stakes diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran over Tehran's contentious nuclear programme concluded on Thursday without reaching a deal. This failure comes as the White House actively considers a significant military operation, which would represent its largest intervention in the Middle East for several decades.
Mediators Express Cautious Optimism Despite Stalemate
Following the talks, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted that "good progress" had been achieved during the discussions. Omani mediators, who facilitated the indirect negotiations, predicted that technical-level talks would reconvene in Vienna next week. Araghchi later confirmed that further contacts between the parties are expected to occur within less than a week.
However, there was no immediate evidence to substantiate claims that the two adversarial nations had moved closer to resolving fundamental disagreements. The core issues remain Iran's asserted right to enrich uranium and the future disposition of its existing stocks of highly enriched uranium.
Geneva Negotiations Held in Tense Atmosphere
The indirect talks in Geneva were conducted across two separate sessions. Reports indicate that the American delegation, led by Donald Trump's special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, expressed disappointment with the proposals presented by Iranian officials.
Observers noted that the brevity of the second session appeared particularly ominous, suggesting significant divisions remained unresolved. The meeting included Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi alongside Witkoff and senior advisor Jared Kushner.
Military Buildup Adds Urgency to Diplomatic Efforts
Despite the lack of concrete progress, both Iranian and Omani mediators attempted to portray the discussions in a more hopeful light. This diplomatic positioning likely aims to avert threatened American military strikes, which could be launched from US aircraft and warships that have recently massed in the region.
The potential for armed conflict adds considerable urgency to diplomatic efforts, with the international community watching closely for any signs of breakthrough or further escalation between the long-standing adversaries.
