Massive Fire at Russian Oil Refinery Sends Smoke Billowing 300km Inland
A series of Ukrainian strikes on Russia's Black Sea port of Tuapse has ignited a colossal fire at an oil refinery, with satellite imagery revealing dark plumes of smoke extending over 300 kilometres inland. The inferno, which erupted following targeted attacks on the facility and surrounding infrastructure, has produced smoke reaching as far as the Stavropol region.
Deadly Strikes and Ongoing Blaze
Ukraine's Security Service confirmed it first struck the Tuapse refinery and port infrastructure on 16 April, with a second attack on 20 April hitting an oil terminal and triggering a massive fire. These strikes resulted in one fatality and left another individual injured. According to Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation, the fire continued to burn intensely as of late Tuesday.
NASA Worldview images vividly depict the extensive smoke emanating from burning oil storage tanks. The Fire Information for Resource Management System project continues to detect active hotspots, indicating the blaze remains uncontrolled. Firefighting efforts in the Krasnodar region are still underway as authorities grapple with the aftermath.
Zelensky Calls for EU Loan Unblocking After Pipeline Repair
Amid the escalating conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urgently called upon the European Union to unblock a crucial €90 billion loan. This appeal follows his announcement that the Druzhba pipeline, which transports Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia, has been successfully repaired after damage sustained in a Russian attack in January.
The pipeline's repair has significant political implications, as Hungary's Viktor Orban had previously refused to allow the EU loan to proceed until oil flows were restored. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas indicated that a decision on the vital loan could materialise within twenty-four hours, with the first tranche potentially arriving by late May or early June.
Diplomatic Tensions and Additional Developments
Zelensky has also criticised repeated visits by Donald Trump's envoys to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin, describing their failure to travel to Kyiv as "disrespectful." Meanwhile, Italy summoned the Russian ambassador to protest against offensive remarks directed at Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni by a pro-Kremlin television host.
In other conflict-related incidents, Ukrainian drones struck an oil dispatch facility in Russia's Samara region, causing a fire and damaging multiple crude oil tanks. Additionally, part of a residential apartment block collapsed in the Russian city of Syzran following a Ukrainian drone attack, with search and rescue operations ongoing.
Humanitarian and Environmental Aspects
On the humanitarian front, British singer Dua Lipa has funded the delivery of a pickup truck to Ukraine's First Separate Medical Battalion, supporting frontline medics in life-saving missions. In a contrasting environmental note, wildlife is reportedly thriving in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, with species such as Przewalski's horses, wolves, and brown bears returning to the radioactive landscape decades after the nuclear disaster.
As the conflict continues to evolve, these developments underscore the complex interplay of military actions, diplomatic manoeuvres, and humanitarian efforts shaping the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.
