Britain's newly appointed ambassador to the United States, Sir Christian Turner, hosted his inaugural welcome reception in Washington D.C. on Monday evening, serving traditional fish and chips alongside signature 'Turner Tonic' cocktails to guests. The event, held at the ambassador's official residence at 3100 Massachusetts Avenue, marked Sir Christian's formal debut as the UK's top diplomat in the American capital.
Awkward Timing Amid Police Investigation
However, the celebratory atmosphere was overshadowed by developments in London, where Sir Christian's predecessor, Lord Peter Mandelson, was simultaneously being questioned by police. The former Labour peer, who served as Britain's ambassador to the US until his dismissal last September, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and held for approximately nine hours at Wandsworth Police Station.
Lord Mandelson, aged 72, was released on bail in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with footage showing him being driven from the police station. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest followed search warrants executed at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas, though officials declined to provide further details to avoid prejudicing the ongoing investigation.
Epstein Connection and Alleged Information Sharing
The allegations against Lord Mandelson stem from documents released by the US Department of Justice last month as part of the so-called 'Epstein files'. These emails from 2009 appear to show the former business secretary passing sensitive government information to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including assessments of potential policy measures, an asset sales plan, discussions about a bankers' bonus tax, and confirmation of an imminent euro bailout package.
The Cabinet Office previously referred material to police after an initial review suggested 'safeguards were compromised'. Lord Mandelson has consistently denied breaking any laws or acting for personal gain, though he has expressed regret over his friendship with Epstein. The Crown Prosecution Service has yet to offer investigative advice regarding the allegations.
Sir Christian's Diplomatic Debut
Sir Christian Turner, appointed by the Prime Minister in December to fill the vacancy created by Lord Mandelson's dramatic exit, formally assumed his role earlier this month. He was recently photographed presenting his credentials to US President Donald Trump, and during Monday's reception, he shared anecdotes about their meeting.
According to reports, Sir Christian told guests how President Trump 'gave me this rather lovely hat', producing a red MAGA hat reading 'America is back!'. He then humorously added, 'But he slightly confused me, because I also have this hat,' revealing a 'Make Wales Great Again' hat.
Addressing US-UK Relations and Correcting Misconceptions
In his address, the new ambassador described the US-UK relationship as an 'indispensable partnership', stating, 'We must not disregard everything that has sustained us for 80 years. Instead, we must build on it. We must find new ways to uphold our values, and the rule of law, and we must make this a moment of radical renewal.'
Sir Christian also gently rebuked Trump allies over comments regarding free speech in Britain and crime rates in London. Quoting a definition of a diplomat as 'someone who tells you how to go to hell in such a way as you want to ask for directions,' he pledged to 'get stuff done' while engaging in debate.
'I will tell you why London is the safest city in the G7 - fact - why we're not curtailing free speech - fact - and I want to hear how you see it too,' he asserted, emphasizing his commitment to factual dialogue and strengthening transatlantic ties despite the awkward circumstances surrounding his predecessor's legal troubles.
