Hollywood luminaries including Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Hudson graced the red carpet at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, held at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in central London. The star-studded event saw a dazzling array of talent from both sides of the Atlantic, with Irish actors Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley also making a striking appearance together.
A Glorious Year for British Cinema
Bafta chairwoman Sara Putt heralded the UK film industry's exceptional year, describing it as "glorious" with a "fabulous" range of pictures. She emphasized the diversity of the nominees, stating, "You look at the best British film nominees – the 10 best British film nominees – and it's sort of a panoply of British and Irish and international filmmaking, talent, producers, directors, behind the camera, talent, cast." Putt added that alongside major blockbusters like One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, and Sinners, the variety has been outstanding, making it "a really good year for watching."
Red Carpet Highlights and Fashion Statements
The red carpet was a spectacle of style and glamour. Scottish actor Alan Cumming, who hosted the ceremony, made a bold fashion statement with a pink, blue, and white headpiece adorning his slicked-back hair, complemented by a long suit jacket featuring fringe that faded from black into green and cream. British-Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku, nominated for best supporting actress for Sinners, shimmered in a bright blue dress, while American actress Chase Infiniti, up for best actress for One Battle After Another, opted for a simple burgundy dress with a bandeau top and flared mermaid skirt.
Other notable attendees included Stellan Skarsgard, who arrived in a classic black tuxedo with his wife, film producer Megan Everett-Skarsgard, and Warwick Davis, who stood out in an eye-catching hot pink shirt under his black tuxedo. Emily Watson, nominated for a supporting actor award, also walked the carpet, adding to the evening's prestige.
Record-Breaking Nominations and Award Contenders
The film Hamnet, a big-screen adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's award-winning novel about William Shakespeare's family life, directed by Chloe Zhao, made history with 11 Bafta nominations—the most for a female-directed film in Bafta history. These nominations span categories such as best film, outstanding British film, and best director for Zhao. Jessie Buckley, who plays Shakespeare's wife Agnes Hathaway in Hamnet, is tipped for victory after an unbeatable run through the awards season, while Paul Mescal, portraying Shakespeare, is nominated for best supporting actor, and co-star Emily Watson is up for best supporting actress.
Stellan Skarsgard's performance in the Norwegian film Sentimental Value, which has six Bafta nominations, earned him a best supporting actor nod for his role as a film director past his prime. The presence of Hollywood couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons further underscored the international appeal of the ceremony, highlighting the blend of British, Irish, and global talent that defined this year's Baftas.
