British Army Veteran Homeless in Dubai After Wrongful Arrest and Acquittal

John Murphy, a 59-year-old British Army veteran and grandfather, is facing a dire situation on the streets of Dubai, where he has been left homeless and penniless nearly a decade after being wrongfully arrested and later acquitted of charges. His ordeal began in 2017 when he was arrested in the United Arab Emirates after accidentally brushing against a hotel security guard's hip while walking by. Although cleared of 'sexual deviance' charges, Murphy's nightmare has only intensified, as he is now banned from working in the UAE and prevented from leaving the country, leaving him to survive in scorching conditions without basic necessities.

A Life Turned Upside Down

Once the operations manager at the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, Murphy now spends his days riding the metro to escape the heat and his nights wandering the streets alone. He is in urgent need of medical and dental treatment, including potential skin cancer care, but is unable to access healthcare due to his circumstances. Homelessness is illegal in the UAE, making it difficult for him to find shelter or even beg for help, forcing him to sneak into shopping centres to use bathrooms and maintain hygiene.

Financial and Legal Struggles

During his six-week imprisonment in Al Awir and Al Wathba jails, Murphy's landlord sued him for rent arrears, leading to a debt that has ballooned over the years. He has faced annual imprisonments of two weeks to a month and fines totalling £20,000, reducing his debt from £92,000 to £12,000 but leaving him with no means to pay it off. His belongings were seized, a travel ban was imposed, and his passport was withheld, preventing him from working and depleting his life savings. He now relies on GoFundMe donations, with an expected £140 allowing him to eat two small meals daily for one month.

Health and Survival Concerns

In a recent interview, Murphy expressed fears that he won't survive the summer, as nighttime temperatures are expected to remain above 36 degrees Celsius. He has gone days without food, wears the same clothes for weeks, and struggles with failing health. Despite his resilience from military training, he feels abandoned, particularly by the Irish Embassy, from which he hasn't heard in months. An Irish Government spokesperson stated they are aware of the case and providing consular assistance but declined to comment further.

Outcry and Calls for Action

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, has condemned the situation, calling it outrageous that Murphy, proven innocent, is starving and denied treatment. She highlighted that the UAE's system criminalises debt, trapping individuals in poverty, and urged the British and Irish governments to intervene, noting that the Trump administration successfully repatriated American citizens from the UAE. Murphy's family has been trying to repatriate him to Ireland, but efforts have so far been unsuccessful, leaving him to face his fate alone on the streets.
