Love Island Viewers Slam Belle Hassan Over Edit Defence
During the live finale of Love Island on Monday night, dumped islander Belle Hassan faced a frosty reception as she attempted to defend herself against bullying allegations. The event saw Sammie Elishi and Ciaran Davies crowned winners, but attention quickly shifted to Belle's controversial response to viewer backlash.
Belle's Controversial Explanation
When host Maya Jama questioned Belle about her behaviour on the show and the subsequent criticism, Belle pointed to the editing process. "I think for me, watching a few things back that I have seen since, I feel like a lot hasn't been shown," she explained. "The good time and the other things that kind of show the reason for the upset and the anger with things. And you know, I think we had an amazing time. And it's a shame that when we are all friends and everything is great, a lot of that wasn't shown."
Viewer Reaction and Criticism
This defence did not sit well with many viewers, who took to social media to express their disappointment. One viewer wrote: "Lol.not zeze being sooooo right on 24/7 switch up line from belle.. lazy blaming the edit strikes again." Another added: "also, belle, i get that we only see an hour a day but if you are completely insufferable, microaggressive, volatile, and abrasive for an entire hour everyday for a whole month…that's a reflection of your character, not the edit."
Further comments highlighted Belle's perceived lack of accountability: "Belle took NO accountability again…" and "Belle said that a lot hasn't been shown but she hasn't mentioned that she apologised so we've seen enough to form a negative opinion on her."
Background of the Controversy
Belle has been at the centre of controversy for weeks, primarily due to her behaviour towards fellow islander Lucinda. Tensions began when Lucinda stole Sean Stone from Belle, leading to an aggressive confrontation. Later, Belle made a play for Scott, who was coupled up with Leanne Amaning, despite claiming the situation was not as severe as her own experience with Sean.
This move prompted Lucinda to confront Belle, sparking a war of words as Lucinda argued that Belle's actions were worse. Viewers watched as Belle pulled Scott for a chat in the Secret Garden, further fuelling the drama.
Love Island All Stars Line-Up
The finale also highlighted the upcoming All Stars series, featuring returning islanders such as:
- Whitney Adebayo (Age 28, Series 10) – Seeking a fresh start in the villa.
- Millie Court (Age 29, Series 7) – Eager to relive the experience after four years.
- Belle Hassan (Age 27, Series 5) – Hoping to find a husband after heartbreak.
- Helena Ford (Age 29, Series 12) – Looking for a better experience this time.
- Jess Harding (Age 25, Series 10) – Aiming to show maturity after a rocky first ride.
Other notable returns include Leanne Amaning, Scott Van-der-Sluis, Lucinda Stafford, and many more, each with their own reasons for seeking love or redemption in the villa.
The incident has sparked broader discussions about accountability in reality television, with many arguing that Belle's response reflects a common trend of contestants blaming edits rather than addressing their actions directly.
