Scott Mills has been dismissed from his role as presenter of the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show following an unspecified failure of personal conduct, the corporation has announced. The decision, taken with unusual speed, comes in the final days of Tim Davie's tenure as director general, which ends on 2 April.
Mr Mills, 53, told listeners on Tuesday morning that he would return to the airwaves on Wednesday, but instead Gary Davies stood in for the rest of the week. The sudden departure, with no prior speculation, has taken many by surprise. The BBC has not disclosed details of the alleged misconduct.
The swift resolution contrasts with other recent cases. Presenters such as Wynne Evans and Kaye Adams were suspended pending investigation, while Huw Edwards remained on leave for months before resigning. The rapid termination of Mr Mills's contract suggests the BBC legal department reached a quick conclusion.
Mr Mills joined Radio 1 in 1998, hosting the breakfast show before moving to afternoons and then to Radio 2 for early afternoon and early evening slots. He took over the Radio 2 breakfast show in January 2025. He also presented television programmes including Top of the Pops and the National Lottery draw, and appeared on Strictly Come Dancing.
