Lucy Liu Reveals Terrifying Breast Cancer Misdiagnosis in Early 2000s
Lucy Liu Opens Up About Breast Cancer Misdiagnosis Scare

Lucy Liu is sharing a deeply personal and alarming health scare from the early 2000s, revealing she was incorrectly diagnosed with breast cancer. The 57-year-old actress, who recently attended the Women of the Year gala, opened up about discovering a lump in her breast and the subsequent medical ordeal that followed.

A Frightening Diagnosis Without Proper Testing

"I didn't really think too much about it," Liu told People magazine about initially finding the lump. "But it was scary, because at that time, there was less information that was available, because we didn't have internet."

The actress recalled her doctor "sort of felt the lump and said it was cancer" without ordering crucial follow-up tests like an ultrasound or mammogram. Instead of receiving proper diagnostic imaging, Liu found herself facing immediate surgery to remove what was presumed to be a cancerous growth.

Learning to Advocate for Herself

Only after the surgical procedure did Liu learn the lump wasn't cancerous. "I think that was the beginning of understanding how to advocate for myself," reflected the star of the upcoming Devil Wears Prada sequel.

Liu admitted she initially brushed off advice from friends to seek a second medical opinion. "Even though my friend had said to get a second opinion, I sort of thought, 'Well, what's the point? The doctor knows what they're talking about,'" she explained.

Transforming Fear into Positive Action

Now a mother of one, Liu has transformed this traumatic experience into motivation to encourage others. "I never really reflect and regret. I always look at a situation and I grow from it," she noted. "I think there are too many punishing moments that you can have, and I don't think it should start from that place."

Instead, Liu advocates for a more positive approach: "I think it should start from a much more positive place, because you can't go back in time. So it's more like, okay, what can I do differently and what is a better choice for myself and for others?"

Partnering for Cancer Prevention Awareness

The actress has partnered with pharmaceutical company Pfizer to promote cancer prevention and early detection initiatives. "Cancer has shaped my life in both the time we've gained and the time we've lost, and that's why this matters to me," Liu wrote in an Instagram caption this week.

She emphasized to her nearly two million followers: "Early detection is key." In a brief video shared on social media, Liu stated, "The most important screen is the one that has the potential to save your life. My own breast cancer scare nearly 20 years ago was a powerful reminder of how critical awareness can truly be."

Encouraging Women's Health Advocacy

In her People interview, Liu expressed optimism about growing health advocacy: "I feel like a lot of people have been advocating for themselves more and more, and especially for women's health in general. I think it is vital, because I don't want to continue to lose people, and I don't want people to feel hurt and lost and scared."

The Hollywood veteran stressed the importance of making health screenings routine: "I want this to be part of their regular regimen – if you can get up every single day and work out, this is something you do just once or twice a year for yourself, and it is really critical."

Liu's experience highlights the importance of thorough medical testing, seeking second opinions, and proactive health management, particularly in women's healthcare where early detection can make life-saving differences.
