A father-of-two from Monmouth died days after going to the GP complaining of shortness of breath and chest pains, an inquest opening has heard.
Inquest Details
The inquest opened into the death of James Michael Ridley, 61, of Hereford Road, Monmouth, who was found dead at home by a family member on May 18, after suffering heart failure.
Newport Coroner's Court heard on Monday that an investigation has been launched into his death because of concerns raised by Mr Ridley's family. The court heard that Mr Ridley had been to the GP days before his death to discuss symptoms such as shortness of breath and pain in his chest, but the GP did not refer Mr Ridley to a specialist or offer any treatment.
Post-Mortem Findings
Coroner Rose Farmer told the court that a post-mortem examination concluded that Mr Ridley died of congestive heart failure and cardiomegaly, caused by coronary heart disease.
Tributes from the Community
In the days following Mr Ridley's death, tributes were issued by his friends and teammates at Monmouth RFC. Chairman Byron Hapgood, speaking on behalf of the club and also of Rockfield Golf Society, described his late friend as "an absolute legend".
Mr Hapgood said: "It is with great sadness that I report the sad and sudden death of James (Jim) Ridley.
"Our thoughts are with wife Di, sons Jacob and Christian, and family. Sincere condolences to all. A much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and great friend to many."
"On the rugby front he was the first player to have represented every age group throughout young rugby, youth and then go on to play for our First XV at Monmouth RFC."
"A proud player also at both Pontypool and Cross Keys. Representing also Monmouthshire County RFC and both Gwent Police and British Police. He served on Monmouth RFC club committee for many years and continued to be an active supporter of the club."
"Jim made many friends also within golfing social circles at Monmouth Golf Club, Rockfield Golf Society, Fitzroy Golf Society and more recently Raglan Golf Club. He will indeed be missed by many - he was an absolute legend - a genuine 'one off.'"
"RIP my friend."
The inquest was adjourned pending further investigations.
