Hong Kong Tower Block Fire Leaves Dozens Dead
A catastrophic fire has torn through a residential complex in Hong Kong, resulting in a significant loss of life. The blaze, which started on Wednesday afternoon, has left at least 44 people dead and a further 45 individuals in a critical condition in hospital. Authorities have reported that hundreds of residents are still unaccounted for following the incident.
Emergency Response and Investigation Launched
The fire erupted at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex, located in the Tai Po district of the northern New Territories. By early Thursday, a dedicated taskforce had been established to determine the exact cause of the inferno. In a significant development, three men, aged between 52 and 68, have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the fire.
Bamboo Scaffolding Blamed for Rapid Spread
Initial reports from the scene suggest that bamboo scaffolding surrounding the tower block may have contributed to the fire's rapid and deadly spread. This material, commonly used in construction across Hong Kong, is highly flammable and appears to have acted as a conduit for the flames, allowing them to engulf multiple floors swiftly. The community is now in mourning as rescue and recovery operations continue at the devastated site.
