DWP PIP 183-Day Rule and Personal Independence Payment Eligibility Explained
DWP PIP 183-Day Rule and PIP Eligibility Explained

Personal Independence Payments (PIP) provide crucial financial support to disabled people in England and Wales, with 3.8 million currently claiming the benefit.

The non-means-tested benefit helps with additional living costs for those with long-term physical or mental health conditions. PIP claimants can receive payments regardless of employment status, savings, or other benefits.

Components of PIP

The benefit comprises two components - a daily living element for everyday tasks and a mobility element for getting around. The DWP said: "You do not have to have a physical disability to get the mobility part. You might also be eligible if you have difficulty getting around because of a cognitive or mental health condition, like anxiety."

The 183-Day Rule

To qualify, applicants must experience difficulties "most of the time" - at least 183 days over a 12-month period. The DWP assesses how difficult claimants find daily living and mobility tasks.

Payment Amounts

Weekly payments range from £30.30 to £114.60 depending on the level of care needed. Those approaching the end of life automatically qualify for the daily living component.

How to Claim

To claim PIP in England or Wales, call 0800 917 2222 between 8am-5pm, Monday to Friday. You'll need to complete a form about how your condition affects you and may require an assessment.
