Alan Davies on Death Fears After Bladder Cancer

Alan Davies, the BBC star best known for Jonathan Creek and QI, has opened up about his fears of death after battling bladder cancer. The 60-year-old actor was diagnosed in 2024 after noticing blood in his urine, which led to the discovery of a small tumour that was surgically removed.

Reflecting on His Cancer Ordeal

Speaking to My Weekly magazine, Davies said: "I'm very fortunate to have beaten bladder cancer. I spotted some blood in my pee and tests detected a small tumour, which I had surgically removed. During that time, I thought a lot about my own mortality. Now, I realise it was a really lucky escape."

He previously discussed the procedure on The Jonathan Ross Show, stating: "In 2024, I had bladder cancer. Luckily, [there was] a little bit of blood in the toilet bowl and I saw it. It's not very nice and it's not as bad as you think. They got it out, so phew."

Bladder Cancer Symptoms

According to the NHS, blood in urine is the main symptom of bladder cancer. Other symptoms include:

  • Pain, burning, stinging, or itching when urinating
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Increased urgency or frequency of urination
  • Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
  • Pain in the back and lower abdomen
  • Aching, pain, or tenderness in bones
  • Unexplained fatigue and general unwellness

It is important to consult a GP if any of these symptoms arise.

New Book and Stand-Up Tour

Davies was writing his new book when he received his diagnosis. Reflecting on the wait for results, he told The Guardian: "It was a bad week, waiting for the results to see if it's gone anywhere else." The experience has inspired his latest stand-up tour, which he describes as "the funniest show I've done," incorporating personal topics including childhood abuse.

Thoughts on Retirement

On Alan Carr's Life's A Beach podcast, Davies discussed his ideal retirement locations, mentioning New York and Sydney Harbour, though he noted that the sound of the sea can be disruptive at night.
