Costco has announced a partnership with Novo Nordisk to offer discounted prices on GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Under the Costco Member Prescription Program, a month's supply of the pens will cost $499 for a four-week supply, a significant reduction from the typical retail price of around $997 for Ozempic and $1,349 for Wegovy without insurance.
The discount is available to Costco members who have a valid prescription and pay out of pocket, without filing a health insurance claim. Additionally, Costco Executive Members and Costco Citibank Visa cardholders are eligible for a further two percent discount, subject to applicable terms.
Dave Moore, Executive Vice President of US Operations at Novo Nordisk, stated that the collaboration aims to make Wegovy and Ozempic easier to access and afford. “Everyone deserves care that’s simple, reliable, and within reach,” he said.
However, the move has sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users expressed concern that the discount could backfire, noting that Costco also sells high-calorie foods like doughnuts and pies. Others defended the initiative, with one user calling it “a real turning point for so many people who've been priced out of these treatments.”
The partnership comes as nearly 12 percent of Americans report using medications to manage blood sugar levels, according to RAND data. While Ozempic is not FDA-approved for weight loss, its side effects include appetite suppression, while Wegovy is approved for weight management.
