Medical experts from Cancer Research UK are urging the public not to ignore specific 'persistent' symptoms that could be crucial for an early cancer diagnosis. The charity emphasises that catching these signs early can significantly impact treatment outcomes.
Key Symptoms You Should Not Ignore
Cancer remains one of the biggest killers in the UK, accounting for approximately a quarter of all deaths. While symptoms vary depending on the cancer type and location, the charity has highlighted four key persistent signs that warrant a conversation with a GP.
These symptoms are considered particularly significant if they 'won't go away'. Cancer Research UK advises: 'Most of the time these symptoms will be caused by something less serious than cancer. But it’s still important to get checked out.'
Mouth or Tongue Ulcer
While mouth ulcers are common, especially during illness, they typically heal within two weeks. The charity recommends seeking medical advice if an ulcer, or a red or white patch in the mouth, fails to heal after three weeks. This could be a potential sign of mouth or oropharyngeal cancer.
Persistent Cough or Hoarseness
A cough that lingers for more than three weeks, changes, or progressively worsens should be investigated. This symptom, which can also include a croaky voice, is one of the most common indicators of lung cancer. Although often linked to colds, an ongoing cough requires professional assessment.
A Sore That Won't Heal
The skin normally repairs itself quickly, with most cuts healing within a week. Any spot, wart, or sore that does not heal, even if it is painless, should be examined by a doctor. This can be a symptom of skin cancer, alongside other changes like new or evolving moles.
Frequent Heartburn or Indigestion
Occasional discomfort after a large or spicy meal is common. However, frequent or particularly painful episodes of heartburn or indigestion should not be dismissed. This persistent issue could be a sign of cancers in the upper digestive tract, such as oesophageal or stomach cancer.
The Importance of Early Action
The core message from Cancer Research UK is clear: early detection saves lives. Speaking to a doctor about any unusual and persistent bodily changes is a vital first step. Prompt medical consultation upon noticing these persistent cancer symptoms can lead to a quicker diagnosis and access to the most effective treatments, ultimately improving the chances of a positive outcome.
