Mary Berry Opens Up About Caring For Her 'Terribly Frail' Husband
Mary Berry on caring for her 'terribly frail' husband

Beloved national treasure Dame Mary Berry has shared a rare and moving insight into her home life, speaking candidly about caring for her husband of nearly six decades, Paul Hunnings, whom she describes as 'terribly frail'.

A Promise of Care and Devotion

In a heartfelt interview with Yours Magazine, the former Great British Bake Off judge, who turned 90 in March, expressed her profound gratitude for still having her husband by her side. She revealed that while she feels 'so lucky' to be in good health herself, the same cannot be said for 93-year-old Paul.

Mary spoke of the simple, caring gestures that define their daily routine. 'Just as I was leaving, I gave him a little plate of smoked salmon, a wedge of lemon, and I cut the crusts off the bread,' she shared. 'And though he doesn't have a drink with it, I'll do the drinking when I get in.'

Her commitment to her wedding vows remains unwavering. Speaking to Woman & Home, she stated, 'That's what I promised to do - for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. And we are very happy in our dotage.' She described caring for him as 'a great pleasure', emphasising that he is 'very cherished and well looked after'.

Secrets to a Long and Healthy Life

While caring for her husband, Mary also detailed the lifestyle habits that keep her thriving. She describes herself as a 'very much a morning person' who enjoys the outdoors and keeps fit with regular walks, a trait she shares with her mother who lived to the remarkable age of 105.

Her approach to food is one of mindful enjoyment and moderation. 'I eat what I enjoy, but I eat very carefully,' she laughed, noting that her husband has always been the one to frequent the biscuit tin. She avoids snacking between meals and, when asked how she maintained her figure while judging Bake Off, told The Belfast Telegraph, 'It's quite simple - I just make sure the next meal is small.'

Her philosophy is clear: 'I don't believe in cutting out certain foods; a little of everything is good for you... Moderation is key.' This includes enjoying a slice of cake with her afternoon tea.

Looking Forward with Family by Her Side

Despite her age, Dame Mary has no plans to retire. She celebrated her 90th birthday with a large family gathering in her hometown of Bath and insists she hopes to continue working for as long as she is able.

The couple's life together has not been without profound tragedy. They have three children: their son William, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 1989 at the age of 19, and their younger son Thomas and daughter Annabel. Annabel now plays an active role in managing Mary's brand and family recipes, ensuring the culinary legacy continues.

Through nearly 60 years of marriage, encompassing both joy and heartbreak, Mary Berry's story remains one of resilience, love, and an enduring commitment to family.
