Pharmacist Warns: Toenail Changes Could Signal Deadly Cancer and Health Issues
Toenail Signs That Could Warn of Deadly Cancer, Expert Says

As spring arrives and people prepare to swap socks for sandals, a pharmacist is urging the public to pay close attention to their toenails, warning that subtle changes could signal potentially deadly health issues, including cancer. Sheena Bagga, a Pharmacist Prescriber at LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, emphasises that toenails and feet, often overlooked during colder months, serve as vital indicators of overall health.

Why Toenail Health Matters

With feet hidden away in winter, many miss early signs of problems. Bagga stresses that healthy nails should have a smooth surface with light pink or translucent colouration, and any deviations might warrant medical attention. She identifies eight key symptoms that should raise red flags, ranging from nutritional deficiencies to serious circulatory conditions.

Dark Stripes: A Potential Cancer Warning

One of the most concerning signs is Melanonychia, characterised by brown or black bands running lengthwise along the nail. While often harmless, in rare cases it can indicate Subungual Melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Bagga advises maintaining good nail hygiene and avoiding trauma to prevent issues.

Yellow Discolouration and Infections

Yellow toenails may point to infections or nail psoriasis, which can alter colour, texture, and thickness. To prevent this, keep nails short and clean, wear fresh socks daily, and ensure proper-fitting footwear.

Swollen Toes and Underlying Conditions

Toe swelling can stem from lymphatic issues, poor circulation, or gout, a form of inflammatory arthritis. Less serious causes include prolonged sitting or ill-fitting shoes. Consulting a GP is recommended if accompanied by pain or restricted movement.

White Spots and Deficiencies

White spots or lines, known as leukonychia, often result from trauma but may indicate protein, zinc, or iron deficiencies. Fungal infections can also turn nails white and brittle, while completely white nails might signal systemic issues like liver cirrhosis or diabetes.

Blue Discolouration and Circulation Problems

A bluish tinge with cold toes could suggest poor blood circulation, linked to Raynaud's disease. Regular exercise and weight management can help improve blood flow and manage symptoms.

Itchy Toes and Fungal Infections

Athlete's Foot, a common fungal infection, causes itchy white patches between toes. Prevention includes thorough drying after washing and wearing breathable cotton socks daily.

Ulcers and Serious Risks

Ulcers, open wounds on the skin, require proper care to prevent infections that could lead to amputation in severe cases, such as diabetic foot ulcers.

Spoon Nails and Iron Deficiency

Curved or spoon-shaped nails may indicate iron deficiency or anaemia. Iron is crucial for red blood cell production and nail health, so healthcare advice is essential.

Bagga concludes that while many toenail issues are treatable, symptoms related to diabetes, poor circulation, or nutritional deficiencies necessitate a healthy, balanced diet and professional medical guidance. Regular foot checks, especially as warmer weather encourages barefoot exposure, could be lifesaving.
