Health authorities have announced the details for this year's spring Covid booster vaccination programme, aimed at protecting those most vulnerable to severe illness. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an update warning that protection from previous Covid-19 vaccinations is beginning to diminish, making this booster crucial for at-risk populations.
Who Qualifies for the Spring Covid Booster?
The eligibility criteria for the 2026 spring booster mirror those from the previous year, ensuring consistency across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Three specific groups are encouraged to take up the free NHS offer to bolster their immunity against Covid-19.
Adults Aged 75 Years and Over
Individuals who are 75 years old or above by June 30, 2026, are eligible for the spring booster. Notably, if you are currently 74 but will turn 75 by that date, you do not need to wait for your birthday to book an appointment. This proactive approach helps ensure timely protection for this age group.
Residents in Care Homes for Older Adults
People living in care homes for older adults are also included in the eligibility list. However, it is important to clarify that carers and staff working in these facilities are not eligible this spring, as the programme specifically targets those most vulnerable to severe disease.
People with a Weakened Immune System
Individuals aged six months and over who have a compromised immune system qualify for the booster. The UKHSA's Green Book outlines detailed criteria for this group, which includes but is not limited to:
- Organ, bone marrow, or stem cell transplant patients
- Those undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- People living with HIV
- Individuals receiving long-term immunosuppressive treatments
- Those with genetic disorders affecting the immune system
Since this list is not exhaustive, eligible individuals are advised to check online or consult healthcare professionals for confirmation.
Booking Your Covid Booster Appointment
The National Booking System opened on April 7, 2026, allowing appointments to be scheduled from April 13 onwards. While the NHS will send invitations, eligible people do not need to wait for these and are encouraged to book as soon as possible.
For those unable to access online services, bookings can be made by calling 119 free of charge, with translation services available if needed. The final day to book an appointment is June 29, 2026, with all vaccinations concluding by June 30.
Key Considerations and Recommendations
Data from last spring's programme indicates that vaccinated individuals were approximately 55% less likely to be hospitalised with Covid-19 in the five to nine weeks following vaccination compared to those who remained unvaccinated. This underscores the effectiveness of the booster in preventing serious illness.
The UKHSA emphasises that while the typical interval for the spring vaccine is around six months after the last dose, it can be administered as soon as three months post-previous vaccination. Importantly, even if someone has not previously taken up a Covid-19 vaccine offer, they are still eligible for protection this spring.
Most individuals do not require extra vaccinations to compensate for missed doses, but those with severely weakened immune systems may be advised by their doctor to receive additional doses. Health authorities urge all eligible persons to take up the offer before the programme closes on June 30, 2026, to maximise community protection and reduce hospitalisation risks.
