UK Inquest Hears Man Took Own Life After Failed Dental Procedure in Turkey

A UK inquest has heard that a man took his own life after suffering from depression following a failed dental procedure in Turkey that left him without any teeth. Pawel Bukowski, a 48-year-old forklift driver originally from Poland, had travelled to a private clinic in Turkey in January 2025 to have his teeth replaced due to periodontal disease, a chronic bacterial infection that can erode gums and lead to tooth and bone loss.

Devastating Impact of Dental Treatment

Norfolk coroner’s court heard on Monday that Bukowski, a married father of three, expected to have temporary dentures fitted after his teeth were removed. Instead, he was informed he would not be provided with any replacements and had to wait six months before returning for new implants. His wife, Daria Bukowska, told the inquest that this news was emotionally devastating, destroying his self-confidence and hope.

She described her husband as someone who always took care of his appearance and health, but the experience left him deeply broken. Bukowski struggled to eat properly without his teeth, drank heavily, and faced financial concerns over paying more than expected for what he considered a failed procedure. His mental health deteriorated rapidly after returning to the UK.

Mental Health Crisis and Hospital Admission

On 24 April 2025, a call to emergency services resulted in Bukowski being admitted to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where a senior practitioner noted he displayed strong suicidal ideation. Despite seeking help, it was decided he did not require psychiatric admission. Tragically, four days later on 28 April 2025, he was found dead at his home.

Norfolk area coroner Johanna Thompson recorded Bukowski’s death as a suicide and stated that a subsequent investigation identified several lessons to be learned. She emphasised that clear factors impacted the care provided to Pawel, highlighting gaps in support and treatment.

Criticism of Care and Calls for Change

Bukowska criticised the care her husband received, asserting that his problems were overlooked at every opportunity. She pointed to a lack of support and a refusal to provide medication for alcohol withdrawal symptoms as contributing factors to his death. She expressed hope that such tragedies would not be repeated, urging better support for other families to prevent similar losses.

This case underscores the severe mental health consequences that can arise from medical procedures abroad and the critical need for comprehensive care and support systems in the UK. The inquest serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing both physical and psychological health in patient treatment plans.
