Michelle Stokes, a 40-year-old mother of four from Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, has undergone a remarkable transformation, shedding over 12 stone after a distressing incident at Alton Towers theme park. The occupational therapist, who once weighed 23 stone 11.4 pounds and wore a size 30, was left in tears when a boat ride in CBeebies Land began sinking under her weight during a family outing in August 2019.
The Turning Point at Alton Towers
Michelle recalls the fateful day when she boarded the ride with her children, despite knowing she exceeded the weight limit. "As we were going around, the back of the boat was sinking and struggling to get back on the ramps," she explained. Ride operators had to stop the attraction and assist her off, leaving Michelle sobbing "all the way home" in the car. This humiliating experience, compounded by years of self-neglect, became the catalyst for change.
A History of Weight Struggles
Michelle's battle with weight began in her late teens and intensified after becoming a mother. With four children – Imogen, 14, Archie, 12, Isaac, 8, and Marnie, 7 – she often prioritised her family's needs over her own wellbeing. "I'd skip meals and end up binge eating," she admitted, describing a cycle of unhealthy habits that included frequent takeaways and confectionery binges after the school run.
Other incidents also highlighted the urgency for change. Michelle fainted during a shopping trip with her daughter due to unstable blood sugar levels, and her GP warned of cardiovascular disease risks and pre-diabetes. Perhaps most poignantly, her young son drew a family picture depicting her as a "big massive round blob with arms and legs," a moment that deeply hurt her.
Joining Slimming World
Just one week after the Alton Towers incident, Michelle enrolled in Slimming World, inspired by her uncle Pete's success in losing over 10 stone. Supported by her husband Dan, 39, and their children as "cheerleaders," she embraced the programme's realistic, habit-based approach. "I've dropped nine dress sizes, halved my BMI, and lost 50 per cent of my starting weight," she proudly stated, now fitting into a size 12 at 11 stone 7 pounds.
Dietary and Lifestyle Overhaul
Michelle's eating habits have transformed dramatically:
- Before: Skipping breakfast or having a full English; lunches were often nothing or a sandwich; dinners consisted of takeaways like Chinese, Indian, or McDonald's; snacks included sweets from petrol stations.
- Now: Breakfast features overnight oats with berries; lunch is a jacket potato with beans, low-fat cheese, and salad; dinner might be spaghetti bolognese with courgette instead of pasta; snacks include fruit and hard-boiled eggs.
She has also adopted an active lifestyle, swimming up to four times weekly, walking the family dog Bonnie for hour-long strolls, and completing a Race For Life 5k for Cancer Research with Dan, who has lost nearly 4 stone himself.
Renewed Confidence and Recognition
In October 2025, Michelle visited Slimming World's headquarters after reaching the final 10 in the Woman of the Year awards. "Now I no longer shy away from photos and don't dodge social situations," she shared. "Losing 12 stone 4.5 pounds has proven I can tackle tough challenges, and that confidence permeates every aspect of my life." Her journey from self-neglect to self-belief serves as an inspiring testament to resilience and health prioritisation.
