A man who won £1million on the National Lottery has said three months of partying left him 'one hour away from dying'. Adam Lopez, 39, from Norfolk, saw his bank balance jump from £12.40 to £1,000,012.40 last July, but the win nearly cost him his life.
Mr Lopez, a former construction worker, told a podcast he 'went out every day' after winning, clearing pubs of champagne and buying bottles everywhere. He said: 'You wake up and go out for breakfast, next thing you know, it's half 11, fancy a cheeky pint... it was sort of that for three months.'
His mother became concerned about his drinking, and he soon began suffering pains in his hip which spread. One morning, he could barely breathe and felt dizzy. He said: 'I looked up at the sky and thought, ‘this might be it.’'
He was taken to hospital, where a nurse told him: 'When you came to us, we were told you were about an hour, maybe two, from dying.' He had a blood clot that had spread to his lung.
Despite the health scare, Mr Lopez said his net worth has more than doubled through online gambling, reaching £3million at one point. He admitted spending around £200,000 on scratchcards over his lifetime.
