Joey Dangsida, a chef from Westminster, has achieved a remarkable weight loss of nine stone, dropping from 25 stone to 16 stone, all while continuing to enjoy fast food. His journey began after a health scare on the London Underground, where a stranger had to nudge him awake due to loud snoring caused by his size. This incident served as a wake-up call, prompting Joey to take action against his declining health, which included constant fatigue and sleep issues.
A Turning Point on the Tube
Working in a busy Thai restaurant, Joey often ate large portions, consuming up to 400 grams of rice per meal. He described feeling perpetually tired and struggling with his weight for years. After the embarrassing tube episode, he decided to make a change, but instead of restrictive diets, he adopted a sustainable approach. Joey joined a MAN v FAT football club in November 2023, a group specifically for men with BMIs over 27.5, which meets weekly for 28-minute small-sided games.
Calorie Deficit Without Sacrifice
Key to his success was maintaining a calorie deficit of around 2,000 calories per day, allowing him to still indulge in junk food but in smaller portions. He emphasized that his diet remained largely the same, just with reduced serving sizes, avoiding the need for bland meals like chicken breast and boiled vegetables daily. This method helped him lose weight steadily without feeling deprived.
Boost in Confidence and Community Support
Since losing weight, Joey's confidence has "skyrocketed." He now attends a gym regularly, something he previously lacked the self-assurance to do. The MAN v FAT club provided not only physical activity but also a supportive community, with over 8,500 participants across the UK benefiting from diet advice, fitness tips, and mental health support. Joey highlighted the welcoming environment, where players of mixed skill levels encourage each other, making it feel like a true community.

Before his weight loss, Joey's meals included heavy dishes like stir-fry with multiple portions and rice. Now, he opts for healthier options such as Huel protein shakes for breakfast and grilled meats with vegetables for lunch and dinner. Compliments from friends and family about his slimmer appearance keep him motivated to maintain this healthier lifestyle.
