Julia Bradbury Confronts Cancer Trauma with New Therapy and Adventurous Spirit
Former Countryfile star Julia Bradbury has made a profound life decision in the wake of her breast cancer diagnosis, openly sharing her journey and plans for emotional healing. The 55-year-old presenter, who underwent a mastectomy in 2021, is embarking on a new form of therapy to address the trauma of her illness, while firmly rejecting a life overshadowed by fear of recurrence.
A Shift Towards Health and Emotional Wellbeing
In a candid interview with Woman magazine, Bradbury revealed that she "won't let herself" dwell on worries about cancer returning. However, she acknowledges the need to process her experience fully, stating, "I'm starting a new type of therapy soon, which is about overcoming trauma. I want to make sure that I have emotionally handled the cancer well and I'm not holding onto something." This approach builds on her existing practices, such as meditation, which she credits as crucial in her recovery.
Bradbury's diagnosis in 2021 prompted a significant lifestyle overhaul, with a renewed focus on health and the outdoors. She reflects, "Cancer saved my life in so many ways. When your health, mobility, movement and capacity to operate on a daily basis is under threat, you're forced to look at what's important. I had to think, 'How do I want to live my life from now on?'" This perspective has led her to embrace activities like forest walks, which she finds "beneficial in so many ways," and encourages her children—son Zephyr and twins Xanthe and Zena, aged 10—to share this passion.
Proving Strength Through Antarctic Adventure
In a testament to her resilience, Bradbury recently completed a 24-day expedition to Antarctica for the ITV series Julia Bradbury's Wonders of the Frozen South. This adventure marked her longest time away from her family since her cancer battle, a decision she describes as "tough" but transformative. During filming, she faced challenges such as a close encounter with a crumbling iceberg, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the environment.
Bradbury explains her motivation: "I don't want to live under a cloud of fear. I had to prove to myself that I could still do this, that there was a strength within me and that I was brave enough." Speaking to the Daily Mail, she elaborated that producing the show was a "pivotal point" in her recovery, adding, "After a breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy in 2021, I didn't think I'd ever be brave enough to leave the safety of my home and family to do something like this again. To achieve it five years after cancer felt like proof I could return to the adventures that I love."
Ongoing Health and Future Outlook
Providing an update on her health in an interview with Woman's Weekly magazine, Bradbury reports positive progress: "My markers are regular checks, good sleep, low inflammation, feeling strong. I've improved my health and fitness, month on month, year on year, since 2021." This commitment to wellness underscores her holistic approach to recovery, blending physical health with emotional healing through therapy.
Bradbury's journey serves as an inspiring example of confronting trauma head-on while embracing life's adventures. Her story highlights the importance of emotional work in cancer recovery and the power of resilience in overcoming personal challenges.
