Jesy Nelson's Documentary Achieves Chart Success Amid Health Advocacy

Former Little Mix member Jesy Nelson has shared an endearing new video of her twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, following the remarkable success of her documentary on Amazon's Prime Video. The emotional film, titled Life After Little Mix, soared to the number one position in the streaming service's viewing charts on Monday, capturing widespread attention.

Heartbreaking Diagnosis and Personal Revelation

The 34-year-old singer, who welcomed her twins prematurely in May 2025 with ex-partner Zion Foster, disclosed last month that both infants have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1), a severe genetic condition affecting motor nerve cells. In her documentary, Jesy opened up about this devastating health battle alongside revealing the truth behind her departure from Little Mix in 2020.

Celebrating the documentary's chart-topping achievement on Instagram Stories, Jesy posted a touching video featuring her baby girls alongside her television screen displaying the number one ranking. She expressed her gratitude with the caption: 'Still can't believe it, thank you everyone.'

Campaigning for NHS Screening Expansion

Since revealing her twins' diagnosis, Jesy has become a vocal advocate for expanding the NHS standard heel prick test to include screening for SMA1. She emphasizes that this simple test, costing approximately £1 per procedure, could have significantly improved her daughters' prognosis by enabling earlier treatment access. Jesy passionately argues that earlier detection might have preserved her twins' leg function, highlighting the critical importance of timely intervention.

Her advocacy gained momentum recently when a petition she launched reached 100,000 signatures, triggering parliamentary consideration. Jesy shared an emotional Instagram clip showing herself and friends watching the signature count climb, culminating in celebratory cheers and tears as it surpassed the milestone. The petition has since exceeded 120,000 signatures.

In her heartfelt caption, Jesy wrote: 'I cannot actually put into words how grateful I am that this moment has just happened right here! And it is all thanks to you guys. Thank you to every single person that took time out of their day to sign this petition. You have no idea how much this means to me and the SMA community. This is the first hurdle but we bloody did it and I truly believe that together we are going to make change!'

Prioritizing Family Over Music Career

As Jesy continues her campaign for newborn screening inclusion, she has revealed that she has temporarily paused her music career to focus entirely on her daughters' wellbeing. During an appearance on Heart FM's Breakfast show with Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston, she explained: 'Look listen I’d never say never to music, but for me, my girls are my main focus, I’ll be honest with you, I’ve not got time, I really don't. They are my whole heart and soul and my main focus, and I want to continue advocating for them and getting this heel prick test changed and getting them strong, that’s my main focus. Because that’s going to determine their future. That’s my main focus right now.'

Jesy previously described to Daily Mail the emotional challenges of daily care, noting that medical procedures often leave her feeling like she's hurting her babies as they cry and scream. She characterized this experience as an emotional rollercoaster, with some days being particularly difficult while others offer slight relief. Neither she nor Zion anticipated such intensive caregiving responsibilities, making each day a profound struggle.

Revealing Little Mix Departure Details

In her documentary, Jesy also addressed the circumstances surrounding her abrupt exit from Little Mix following a secret suicide attempt in 2020. Despite the close bond she shared with bandmates Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jade Thirlwall, she revealed that their relationship deteriorated after her lawyer informed them of her departure before she could explain personally.

Jesy recalled: 'Unfortunately, the lawyer ended up letting them know that I wanted to leave, before I could let them know, so I think they felt really hurt by that, and it should never have played out like that. I feel mad that that was taken away from me, and I didn't get an opportunity to explain why I couldn't do this anymore.'

Following her overdose, Jesy was scheduled to appear in the final of Little Mix's BBC talent show The Search, with host Chris Ramsey explaining her absence as illness. The communication breakdown created significant distance between her and the band. Jesy described a subsequent phone call as awkward and uncomfortable, noting it felt like speaking to strangers, marking the last time she communicated with them as a group.

Understanding Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease that weakens muscle strength by affecting motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, leading to gradual muscle wasting. The severity varies by type:

  • Type 1 SMA: Most severe, evident at birth, prevents sitting, and often leads to death by age five.
  • Type 2 SMA: Intermediate severity, prevents standing.
  • Type 3 SMA: Mild form, makes rising from sitting position difficult.
  • Type 4 SMA: Symptoms typically appear in adulthood during twenties or thirties.

Jesy Nelson's documentary success and advocacy work have brought renewed attention to this condition, highlighting both personal resilience and the urgent need for improved healthcare screening protocols.
