Eric Dane, Star of Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria, Dies Aged 53 After ALS Battle
The entertainment world is mourning the loss of actor Eric Dane, who has died at the age of 53 following a courageous fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a form of motor neurone disease (MND). The American actor, celebrated for his roles in Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria, passed away less than a year after publicly disclosing his diagnosis with this progressive neurodegenerative condition.
His representatives confirmed the sad news in a statement to the Associated Press, revealing that Dane spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. The statement highlighted his advocacy work, noting, "Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight."
Remembering Eric Dane's Illustrious Career
Dane's breakthrough came when he joined the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy in 2006, portraying the charming surgeon Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan until 2012, with a guest return in 2021. He later captivated a new generation as Cal Jacobs, the complex antagonist in HBO's hit series Euphoria. His diverse filmography includes roles in Charmed, Burlesque, Marley and Me, and Valentine's Day.
Between 2014 and 2018, he starred as Tom Chandler in the post-apocalyptic action series The Last Ship. On a personal note, Dane married actress Rebecca Gayheart in 2004, and they share two children. Despite filing for divorce in 2018, Gayheart later dismissed the petition, describing their relationship in a 2025 article as "a very complicated relationship... a familial love."
In a poignant turn, Dane drew on his personal experience for a guest role on the TV series Brilliant Minds in November 2025, playing a firefighter diagnosed with ALS who grapples with telling his family.
Recognising the Early Signs of Motor Neurone Disease
In light of Dane's passing, it is crucial to understand the early symptoms of motor neurone disease, which often develop gradually and can be easily overlooked. According to the NHS, these initial signs typically include:
- Weakness or Stiffness: Muscle weakness, particularly in the hands leading to a weak grip, or in the legs causing trips and "foot drop."
- Muscle Issues: Noticeable twitching, cramps, or spasms in the limbs.
- Speech and Swallowing Difficulties: Slurred speech, known as dysarthria, and problems with swallowing.
- Mobility Challenges: Difficulty lifting arms due to shoulder weakness or dragging a leg while walking.
- Physical Changes: Unexplained weight loss, often resulting from muscle wasting.
These symptoms frequently start on one side of the body and may be mistaken for other less serious conditions. The NHS strongly advises consulting a GP if you experience any of these signs, especially if they are worsening, to ensure a timely referral to a specialist for proper diagnosis and care.
Eric Dane's legacy extends beyond his on-screen performances; his advocacy has shone a light on ALS, encouraging greater awareness and research into this devastating disease. He will be deeply missed by fans, friends, and family alike.
