Vicky Pattison Details Terrifying Health Scare with Beloved Dog Max
Reality television star Vicky Pattison has bravely shared the harrowing details of a "very scary couple of weeks" after her dog, Max, faced a life-threatening medical emergency. In an emotional social media post, the Geordie Shore alum expressed her gratitude for fan support while recounting how close she came to losing her cherished pet.
A Sudden and Severe Health Crisis
Pattison explained that Max initially developed a minor upset stomach, which quickly escalated into a critical situation. Within hours, his condition deteriorated rapidly: his stomach swelled, he began panting heavily, and he lost the use of his limbs. The family rushed him to an emergency veterinary clinic, where initial assessments pointed to either a stomach twist or a blockage, both requiring immediate surgical intervention.
"We rushed him to the emergency vet, and without an X-ray, they couldn't determine exactly what was wrong with our baby," Pattison wrote. "They suspected it was either a tummy twist or a blockage—both would require emergency surgery."
Emergency Surgeries and Ongoing Complications
Max underwent surgery to remove a blockage, and while he survived the initial procedure, his recovery was fraught with complications. Over the following week, Pattison and her husband made multiple visits to the vet as Max remained lethargic, in pain, and showed signs of infection. His surgical wound began leaking what appeared to be blood, prompting further alarm.
The situation reached another critical point when Max required an emergency blood transfusion, necessitating a transfer to a specialized referral centre. Over a weekend, he received three blood transfusions due to dangerously low red blood cell counts and underwent a second emergency surgery to address a severe infection contracted post-operation.
Emotional Toll and Recovery
Pattison described the emotional anguish of the ordeal, stating she spent days at home crying and worrying, convinced they might lose Max. "For a week we lay at home crying and worrying, convinced we'd lost our angel," she shared. However, thanks to the dedicated veterinary team, Max eventually stabilized and was able to return home.
"We visited every day, watching him so small and helpless was heartbreaking, but our big brave boy is a fighter," Pattison added. "Eventually on Friday evening we were able to bring him home to his family where he belongs. We love you so much Max, and we're so grateful for you."
Important Advice for Pet Owners
In her post, Pattison emphasized the importance of trusting one's instincts when it comes to pet health. She urged fellow dog owners to act promptly if they sense something is wrong, as animals cannot advocate for themselves. Additionally, she stressed the critical need to identify a reliable 24-hour veterinary service in one's area, highlighting that such preparedness can be lifesaving.
"You know when something is wrong, and you have to advocate for them as they can't themselves," she advised. "Secondly, find a good 24-hour vet in your area, as you're trusting these people with the lives of your family, and that is something I can't stress enough."
This heartfelt revelation comes amid Pattison's recent appearances on shows like Strictly Come Dancing, showcasing her resilience both on and off screen. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the deep bonds between pets and their owners and the vital role of proactive veterinary care.
