Alton Towers Incident Sparks Dramatic Weight Loss for Mother-of-Four
Michelle Stokes, a 40-year-old mother-of-four from Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, experienced a deeply embarrassing moment at Alton Towers theme park that became the catalyst for a remarkable personal transformation. While enjoying a day out in the CBeebies Land area, her weight of 23st 11.4lbs (151kg) caused the boat ride she was on to sink, forcing operators to halt the attraction and assist her off.
The Turning Point at the Theme Park
Ms Stokes, an occupational therapist, recounted the distressing event: 'It was a hot day and I was struggling to walk. I knew I was over the weight limit but they let me onto the ride. As we were going around, the back of the boat was sinking and struggling to get back on the ramps. I cried all the way home – I tried not to in front of the kids but it's difficult not to show emotion.' This humiliation, however, was not the sole motivator for change. She had previously collapsed while shopping with her daughter due to unstable blood sugars from binge eating, and her young son had drawn her as a 'big massive round blob' in a family picture, which deeply hurt her.
Health Warnings and Family Concerns
Her GP had warned her about being pre-diabetic and at risk of cardiovascular disease, urging action. Ms Stokes reflected: 'Seeing the sheer horror on my daughter's face made me realise I need to be here for the children. I was basically digging an early grave for myself.' She had struggled with weight since her late teens, and motherhood to Imogen, 14, Archie, 12, Isaac, eight, and Marnie, seven, exacerbated the issue, leading to self-neglect where she would skip meals and binge on sweets, pastries, and takeaways.
Joining Slimming World and Lifestyle Overhaul
A week after the Alton Towers incident, Ms Stokes, who wore size 30 clothes, joined Slimming World, inspired by her uncle Pete's success in losing over 10 stone. The programme focuses on 'Free Foods' like lean proteins, pasta, and vegetables, without calorie counting, along with measured 'Healthy Extras' and small treat allowances. She embraced the plan with her husband Dan, 39, and children as cheerleaders, adopting a healthier diet including overnight oats for breakfast, jacket potatoes with reduced-fat cheese for lunch, and spaghetti bolognese for dinner.
Remarkable Results and Newfound Confidence
Ms Stokes has shed an impressive 12st 4.5lbs, now weighing 11st 7lbs and fitting into a size 12. She has dropped nine dress sizes, halved her BMI, and lost 50% of her starting weight. 'Now I've got a brand new wardrobe full of clothes and I'm spoilt for choice,' she said. Her active lifestyle now includes swimming up to four times a week, hour-long walks with the family dog Bonnie, and running a 5k Race For Life with her husband, who has also lost nearly 4 stone.
Inspiring Others and Future Outlook
In October 2025, Ms Stokes reached the final 10 in Slimming World's Woman of the Year awards, visiting their head office. She expressed: 'Now I no longer hide from photos and don't avoid social situations like I would have done – I believe in myself like I never did before. Losing 12st 4.5lbs has shown me I'm capable of hard things and that belief spills into every part of my life.' Her journey from humiliation to health serves as a powerful testament to resilience and the impact of supportive weight loss programmes.
