A gripping and binge-worthy historical drama has found a new streaming home. All episodes of Rebellion, originally released by Netflix in 2016, are now available on Prime Video.
The series, consisting of two seasons of five episodes each, tells the story of the birth of modern Ireland through the perspective of fictional characters living through the 1916 Easter Rising. It was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the event, which is remembered as a defining moment in Irish and British history.
According to its synopsis, Rebellion follows three diverse young women and their families, lovers, and friends from Belfast, Dublin, and London who play vital and conflicting roles in Ireland's independence. Some prioritise family loyalties; others are motivated by noble ideals or opportunism; some take up arms, prepared to sacrifice everything for true independence.
The series was created by Irish writer Colin Teevan, who has previously written for crime dramas Silk and Vera as well as the German series Das Boot. While some reviews questioned the dramatisation over historical accuracy, it earned a fan score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fans have shared recommendations online. One wrote: "Binge worthy. Enjoy learning the history of Ireland during the early 20th century." Another added: "This was a fantastic story from the intimate perspective of individuals. How it was actually done. Wow. Could watch again and again."
Someone else highlighted the significance: "Finally, a TV series about the Easter Rising, one of the most important events in Irish history and an inherently dramatic story worthy of remembrance."
One reviewer noted: "While at times the pacing was a bit slow, and the storyline of the characters sometimes distracted from the actual Rising, overall, it's well done."
Another praised the nuance: "I loved this gripping drama about the Irish rebellion in 1916. It's often hard to tell who is right and who is wrong, and all the characters have good motivations. It depicts the moral dilemma faced by revolutionaries and the extent to which people's lives were complicated and loyalties mixed."
They warned that the battles are gritty and brutal: "I could almost feel the bullets lodging inside my body every time someone was hit. It was graphic and bloody. The heroism of those who fought was clear, but so was the terrible cost in lives."
They concluded: "I ended up watching all five episodes back to back. Heartily recommended!"
Rebellion is now streaming on Prime Video.
