Alison Hammond has revealed that a viral moment from The Great British Bake Off left her feeling mortified, admitting she would have preferred it never aired. The 51-year-old ITV presenter, known for her infectious personality, opened up about the 2024 incident during a technical challenge when she fell off a kitchen counter.
The Bake Off Gaffe
While attempting to 'add a little bit of happiness' to the Channel 4 tent, Hammond kicked both legs in the air before accidentally falling backwards off the table. Giggling, she told cameras, 'Don't come over here. Leave me. Leave me.' Co-host Noel Fielding then crawled on top of her, exclaiming, 'That's the best thing I've ever seen, ever.' The clip amassed over three million views on TikTok and became an internet meme.
However, Hammond admitted to XCity Magazine that she was not thrilled with the clip's popularity. 'There are things that have gone viral and I wasn't happy with it,' she said. 'It was so unladylike but people loved it. I was mortified. I would have preferred that it didn't come out. That's where you have to separate the world of what people like and your own ego.'
Editing Out Tears
Hammond also revealed that she often asks for footage of her crying on TV shows to be edited out, explaining, 'I think I'm an ugly crier. So whenever I cry, I ask them, 'Don't put that in.''
Career Highlights
Hammond rose to fame as a contestant on Big Brother in 2002, lasting just 15 days but creating an iconic moment by breaking the garden's picnic table. She has since hosted This Morning, Bake Off, and ITV's For the Love of Dogs, taking over from Paul O'Grady after his death in 2023.
Her memorable This Morning moments include almost getting arrested in Italy during a competition segment and staging a fake wedding with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in 2017. Her most popular interview was with Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling for Blade Runner 2049, where she left them in stitches after admitting she had never seen the original film.
Currently in the running to host Strictly Come Dancing, Hammond said she would be 'absolutely crazy' to turn it down, after previously citing being 'too busy'.
