The Duke of Sussex has undertaken a covert mission to the African nation of Chad, where he joined conservationists in their vital work protecting endangered wildlife from poachers and environmental threats.
Royal Conservation Efforts in Central Africa
Prince Harry, who serves as the African Parks' Global Ambassador, made the surprise visit to Zakouma National Park in southeastern Chad. This protected area has become a remarkable success story in wildlife conservation, having transformed from a poaching hotspot to a thriving sanctuary for elephants and other endangered species.
The royal's involvement comes at a critical time for conservation efforts in the region, where organised poaching syndicates have previously decimated elephant populations. Under African Parks' management since 2010, Zakouma has seen elephant numbers stabilise and begin to recover after suffering devastating losses.
Hands-On Royal Involvement
During his time in Chad, the Duke participated in aerial surveillance operations, providing crucial support to anti-poaching patrols. He also engaged with local communities and conservation staff, learning about the challenges they face in protecting wildlife while supporting sustainable development.
"This isn't just about protecting animals; it's about preserving ecosystems and supporting the communities that coexist with wildlife," a source close to the royal explained.
African Parks' Remarkable Turnaround
The organisation now manages 22 protected areas across 12 countries, covering over 20 million hectares. Their work in Zakouma represents one of their most significant success stories:
- Elephant populations have increased for the first time in decades
- Poaching incidents have reduced dramatically
- Local community engagement has improved significantly
- Tourism and sustainable development opportunities have emerged
Prince Harry's commitment to conservation continues his long-standing passion for environmental protection, following his work establishing the Invictus Games and his various charitable initiatives focused on supporting communities and protecting natural heritage.
