A British expatriate has tragically lost his life in a horrific shark attack while spearfishing off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Lee Berryman, 37, originally from Sheffield, was fatally mauled near the popular diving spot of Kangaroo Point on Sunday afternoon.
The Fateful Dive
Berryman, described by friends as an experienced waterman and skilled diver, was spearfishing approximately 50 metres from shore when the attack occurred. Emergency services received multiple distress calls around 5pm local time, with witnesses reporting seeing a man struggling in the water.
Desperate Rescue Attempt
Fellow divers and boaters rushed to Berryman's aid, pulling him from the water and administering first aid for severe leg injuries. Despite their heroic efforts and the rapid response of paramedics, the Sheffield native could not be saved.

Friends and family have been sharing heartfelt tributes to the man they called a "gentle giant." Close friend Chris McDonough described Berryman as "the salt of the earth" and expressed devastation at the loss.
"He was the kindest, sweetest man, a gentle giant who loved the ocean," McDonough told reporters. "We're all absolutely shattered by this tragedy."
