Cornwall has been struck by tragedy after two women were found dead on separate beaches in what authorities believe may be water-related incidents. Emergency services were called to both locations but were unable to save the victims.
First Incident at Porthtowan Beach
The first woman was discovered at Porthtowan Beach, a popular surfing spot known for its strong currents. Coastguard teams and paramedics rushed to the scene after receiving reports of an unconscious person in the water.
Second Tragedy at Perranporth
Shortly afterwards, emergency services were alerted to another incident at Perranporth Beach, approximately five miles away. Despite immediate medical attention, the second woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ongoing Investigations
Police have confirmed they are treating both deaths as unexplained but not suspicious at this stage. Officers are working to identify the women and notify their next of kin. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police stated: "We are investigating the circumstances surrounding these tragic incidents and would appeal to anyone with information to come forward."
Safety Warnings Issued
The RNLI has reiterated water safety advice following these incidents, particularly warning about the dangers of swimming alone or in unfamiliar locations. A spokesperson commented: "The sea can be unpredictable, even for experienced swimmers. We urge everyone to respect the water and take appropriate precautions."
Local residents have expressed shock at the double tragedy, with many describing the beaches as normally safe family destinations during the summer months.
