Arrest made over huge Oxfordshire fly-tipping site

A 39-year-old man has been arrested following the discovery of a massive illegal waste site in Oxfordshire, a case that has drawn condemnation from the highest levels of government.

Critical Environmental Incident

The arrest is connected to a large-scale fly-tipping operation near Kidlington, Oxfordshire. The illegal dump, situated between the River Cherwell and the A34, is an estimated 150 metres long and 10 metres wide.

Due to its significant potential for environmental harm, particularly its proximity to the river, the Environment Agency has declared this a critical incident. The agency was first alerted to the situation in July.

Operation Nation and Public Outrage

In response, the Environment Agency launched Operation Nation, a dedicated investigation into the incident. As part of their efforts, they have deployed additional officers and installed barriers to help prevent pollution from entering the River Cherwell.

The scale of the waste has provoked widespread anger. Local residents and MPs have expressed outrage, with both the Prime Minister and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer condemning the "disgusting" illegal dump and demanding swift action.

Multi-Agency Cleanup and Accountability

While the Environment Agency does not have a direct duty to clear the waste, it is actively pursuing those responsible to ensure they bear the cost of the cleanup. The agency is working in collaboration with the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit, police, fire services, and Oxfordshire County Council to manage the risks posed by the site.

The investigation, which led to the arrest, is ongoing as authorities work to hold the perpetrators accountable for the environmental damage.
