Nearly 350 American citizens evacuated from China due to the coronavirus outbreak were released from quarantine at two California facilities on Tuesday. The groups had been isolated at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.
The evacuees, all from Wuhan in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, were medically cleared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency stated they pose no health risk to their communities.
At Travis Air Force Base, 180 people were released, including Yanjun Wei and her two children, who were reunited with her husband Ken Burnett at Sacramento International Airport. At Miramar, about 165 evacuees were freed, with some celebrating by tossing face masks in the air.
CDC officials thanked the evacuees for their cooperation and noted that a new group from the Diamond Princess cruise ship arrived at Travis on Sunday but has been kept separate from other quarantined groups.
